Been kicking it around for about a year or two and finally decided that I'm going to switch to a Toyota. Probably end of September, I'm going to start pulling parts off the Jeep and begin parting it out to help fund the purchase of an early year Tacoma. Plans so far are:
Ditch the Jeep and hopefully make a couple of bucks off of parting it out (bumper, doors, tcase, tranny, most of it)
Parts I'm planning to keep:
* Front axle
* Winch
* Seats
* 37's
* Compressor

If I can fund it, plans will be to pick-up an early model Tacoma, V6, extra cab, five speed w/AC. Swap in my existing D44 and switch it over to 6-lug chevy outters. I really want to keep the suspension linked and stay away from leap springs, so probably pick-up brackets from Poly Performance for a 4-link rear and 3-link front. Front will obviously be done first and the rear probably down the road.
Bed will definitely be bobbed, I really like my current departure angle, so I'm going to try to get as close to it as I can. I'm also thinking of shortening the wheelbase to make it a little more trail friendly, while still having the extra cab for the dog to hang out in when we go camping.
So I figure, the rig's last run will probably be mid to late September and then parts start getting pulled.... :hack:
Here's what I'm hoping I'll be able to sell off immediately and then continue to part it out until it goes to the wrecker or someone buys the title:
* Rear axle - '79 Ford 9", big bearing, Strange 3rd member, 5.43 Yukon gears, 35-spline Detroit locker, Moser chromolly 35-spline shafts
* Clayton hard-arm suspension links w/Currie Johnny Joints (7" stretch setup with triangulated rear uppers)
* Sniper-Fab crawler bumper
* Sniper-Fab tube bumpers (no flare version)
* '97 2.5L w/~85K
* (I believe) '92 AX5 w/~45K (post Fordyce blow-up 😀 )
* '92 NP231 w/SYE - 21 spline (also post Fordyce blow-up 😀 )
* Rear driveshaft front 1310 rear 1350 for 7" stretch
* Half doors with new uppers
* Bikini top w/no drill header
* all interior parts (dash/airbags/etc)
* 5 on 5.5, 15x8 steel wheels w/weld-on beadlocks
Frame is already cut and customized, so that will probably get trashed along with the body since it's comp cut.
So with any luck, hopefully I'll be able to pick up the rig I want and get to building over the Winter!

Sure thing John. I'll cut off anything that is frame mounted, the mounts on the axles though are just standard Rubicon Express mounts. The rear triangulated upper link I can remove from the axle, although I had always wanted to cut it off and build something that was closer to the top of the housing, I don't like how big it is.

I'll give you guys all first shot at any parts once they start coming off. Interior panels are the lighter grey color, it's a '97. The doors were originally white and I just did a rattle can paint job over the top of them so it didn't look like a Snoopy mobile cruising to the Rubicon last summer.
This will actually be the second Tacoma I've owned though. I had a '99 PreRunner prior to buying the Wrangler. It was just a little bit wider in the seating area and I really liked it. Only reason I got rid of it was because I wanted a 4x4. Power and overall build of the truck was really great though and I never had any problem with it.
FYI, that 9" is stock width, so it's about 65" wide, just want to make sure you knew!
There is a slight leak in the pinion seal, it's a quick job to have it replaced - just haven't gotten around to it. It's never leaked while driving, just slightly weaps when it's parked for a long time. I've kept the gear oil full at all times though just to be sure.

Oh yeah, FYI - those are still drums back there. Up until about a year ago, they were still strong enough that I had to be careful stepping on the brakes though or I'd lock up the rig. Somewhere in my Jeep now though, there's a bit of compression loss in the brake system, but even with that I can still lock it up on 37's with a stock booster ![]()

You can build a sweet Toyota crawler for pretty cheap, including purchase price of the vehicle.
That's the thing I've noticed for a long time. Aside from ditching the front suspension it seems like all the parts are actually REASONABLY priced for Toyotas including reduction boxes. Seems like all the equivalent parts for Jeeps are 2x to 3x as expensive for no other reason than they go on a Jeep.
I'll be selling those headlights too FYI, they sell new for about $89 a piece and are great for those who have gone to tube fenders. They are standard 7" round size, so they almost drop right in. There's a bit of plastic you have to trim in the headlight housing area for the blinker assembly, then they just drop right in. They're currently set as running lights/blinkers. They're these ones:

Sounds good, I don't remember what it cost - so we'll figure out a fair price for it all. The thing I did not use was the Clayton shock relocation setup though. I ended up using Ford shock towers for my rear setup. Keep in mind you'll need longer e-brake lines as well if you've got one still
Remind me when it comes time that I've got a fuel line extension for the setup too. It's a braided line with the correct connections to extend the stock line for a relocated tank.

It's setup for the triangulated upper Clayton setup. John has asked for the bridge as part of the suspension, but I'll see if the bridge can be purchased seperately from Clayton and we can figure it out. I'll check in again when I'm ready to start tearing it all apart. I want to open up the axle and make sure everything looks good before I sell anything. Don't want to sell anybody junk that explodes on them two days down the road ![]()
