Nothen worse than driving a jeep with busted tunes 🙁 It seems when the stock sub-woffer goes the gear grinding starts, you can't hardly get it into 4-low and the springs sag.Not to mention it's 5 seconds slower off the line.
Anybody ever change out a stock sub in a TJ before I call Crutchfield to see what they have. I don't want to put a sub in the back of the jeep, that's where all the trail stuff goes.

Well I'm going to start that process then. All those noises coming from under the jeep is going to drive me
Yep. I just got my yellow jeep dialed in on the noise problem and the balck jeep is now starting up. It never ends!

The Tunes have been repaired 😀 I should say replaced. 5-1/4 kicker's in the dash and rollbar. An 6-1/2 kicker sub in the console and a rockford fosgate amp with a sony head unit. (It works great 8) But I would have to say that since the last time I actully installed a stereo system ( back in 81 in a Ford Pinto) there seems to be a heck of alot more wiring. It was easier to do my 4 to 1 gears in the transfer case.
Don't laugh, the Pinto was high school days And it was easy to get unstuck

I have been wondering if the Kicker replacement speakers are any good. So your pretty happy with them? Is it a big improvement over stock?

I definitely notice the difference in the 5-1/4s from stock to the kickers ,but I'm also using a aftermarket head unit. I did not try the speakers with the stock stereo unit. I replaced everything at once. I'm not a speaker expert and I'm sure there are other speakers out there that someone would say are better, but I'm very happy with the combination I've picked. I like a little thump in my sound so the biggest difference came from the 6-1/2 sub in the stock location and the new amp. Night and day.

I was reading a Rod & Custom car magazine and they were putting together a system based on in ipod Nano with the built in FM receiver. Apparently Apple is also working on an FM receiver app that would work in my iphone. Their biggest concern was space, but I was thinking that it might be a good way to go in any open vehicle to reduce the likelihood of theft since it would be easy take the Nano/iphone with you.
Has anyone thought about eliminating the head unit all together. I don't know much about modern car stereo either. It seems like I could use the 30 pin ipod cable with the RCA jacks to feed the audio into a small amp then hook the speakers up to the amp. My Jeep doesn't have a sub woofer so I don't think I'd need a big amp to drive some replacement speakers in the soundbar and in the dash.
Any suggestions?

Good question, I'm not sure. Maybe just run it full volume all the time? 🙄
The Rod & Custom article did have another device between the ipod & amp that allowed for volume, fade & balance controls. I thought maybe that could be eliminated but maybe not. I'll have to get the ipod RCA cables and test it.
Its starting to seem like using a head unit with ipod control may be the easiest thing to do.

Looks like something like this would work for volume control. http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_clea ... rod_id=446

I didn't see a cost on there, but when you start adding stuff up it's probably going to be the same cost as a Walmart deck with a usb port and a preamp output. 😀 Kelly got a smoking deal on a Kenwood deck for the 4Runner from the Crutchfield warehouse website. It's refurbished, but it's got all the bells and whistles. Any particular reason you're trying to avoid a deck?

I like to drive the Jeep to work with the top & doors off now and then. I don't want it to look like there's anything worth stealing in it.
I've already tried over-the-air and in-line FM transmitters with the factory radio and wasn't very satisfied. But maybe I should look around in that area and keep the factory stereo.

I got one of these for my corolla. CD quality sound and in-dash control from the factory stereo. Tucks away out of view nicely. They may have a similar model that works with a Jeep stereo...

I've found similar devices for 2004+ Jeeps, but nothing that would work on my 2000 other than the FM modulators. I'll keep looking, maybe I just missed it.

I left my stock stereo where it is and have a Smittybilt center stereo security console (YJ) that holds my Sony stereo. Smittybilt doesn't make one for the TJ but Tuffy has one for $$$$. 😯
Not sure if you want to go that route though.

Here's the volume/fader switch the R&C magazine used. It's the VC1 toward the bottom of the page. http://v8audio.net/Products.html
They fed the Ipod input into this then into an amp.
It would surely be easier to just put in a new head unit. I really like this Kenwood unit http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113MP745U/ ... 5684&avf=N but I can't stop thinking I might as well scotch tape a couple $100's on the dash instead. At least no one would destroy the dash when stealing them.
The Tuffy console would be nice but too expensive. I'd also loose the cupholders. 😯 Well not entirely but they'd be in the back seat.
