Nice find! That looks like my solution to go along with that Kenwood radio I posted earlier today.

Thank you Kevin, I just ordered the radio vault. Now I just have to make my final decision on the radio.

I installed the ivault and Kenwood head unit this weekend. I'm very satisfied with the radio. It's nice to be able to connect my iphone and play music and get gps instructions loud enough to hear them.
The ivault didn't give me the best first impression, but when all's said and done it's fine. The ivault is a Quadratec branded item but is manufactured by Omix-Ada and/or Rugged Ridge (both names were on the documentation). When the package arrived it was in the typical nice looking Quadratec packaging. Inside the box was another box labeled "Made in China". This box looked like something from Harbor Freight and actually had that Harbor Freight aroma to it as well. While it looked cheap it actually did a good job of protecting the ivault during shipping.
When I got the ivault out of its packaging I noticed the quality of construction just wasn't up to what I had anticipated. There are some booger welds and gaps and misaligned pieces. Fortunately this all gets hidden once the radio is installed. Also, the radio mounting brackets in the ivault were a little too wide for my radio but I used some washers as spacers to fill in the gaps.
Another defect I found was there was some thin, maybe 1/16" weather stripping on the inside of the ivault cover. That wasn't nearly enough thickness to actually make any kind of seal. I peeled it off and installed some thicker weather strip.
The ivault includes a small storage slot below the radio. It's too small for me to put my fingers in to retrieve anything that might be in there. On top of that, the trim for my radio hangs down over the top of the storage slot further reducing size of the opening. I doubt I'll ever put anything in there.
Overall, I say this was a decent product for the price, but it's definitely not top-notch.

Omix is the world's largest supplier of after market auto parts. Nearly all of it now comes from China. Rugged Ridge is their off-road line.
That smell you get is an pesticide/anti-corrosion spray that they do to the shipping containers.
I was wondering about this product, so thanks for the write up!

I'll bring my Jeep to the next meeting so you can take a look. I'd buy it again, but I'd have lower expectations. I think it will do it's job and I like the idea of it better than removing/reinstalling the faceplate frequently.

I like the idea of tring to protect one's stuff in the rig but what you said earlier
"I like to drive the Jeep to work with the top & doors off now and then. I don't want it to look like there's anything worth stealing in it."
Would'nt that make it seem you really do have something good in there to steal?
No offence, just playing the devil's advocate. 🙂

Yeah, I know what you're saying, but hopefully this might help deter the lazier thief. At least with this the radio is actually screwed in rather than just sliding into one of the DIN adapter sleeves.

Where did you say you got that setup again I might need to get me one of those 🙂
I think I got the last one.
If you're serious though, Kevin posted a link back on page two.

No one steals car stereos anymore. I doubt I have taken a report for a stolen stereo in 5 plus years. There isn't really any resale in them unless you have a top end Eclipse deck worth over a grand. I have over $1500 in stereo equipment in my Jeep and it is the last thing I am worried about getting stolen. I have over $30,000 in after market parts that I don’t want stolen…I think I would spend more money in protecting the entire Jeep than a stereo that no one wants.

I am overly paranoid about my Jeep getting stolen. I keen reading about rigs getting stolen in our area so I won't leave my Jeep anywhere I can't keep an eye on it. I plan on installing some kind of hidden kill switch as soon as I figure out which wire I am going to tap into.
My Dad has a hidden kill switch on his Cherokee and someone tried to steal it twice in 5 weeks at the light rail parking lot. They failed both times. 8)

I bought a set up from 12volt guy on the pirate board. Seems real slick. A couple of relays and you have to press the button or it won't start. It's all auto parts store stuff and I can send you the schematic if you want to take a look.

I have a kill where you have to punch in a code to start the Jeep. It looks like a phone keypad. I think I got it from JC Whitney a long time ago. It's worked great for many years. 😀
If my brakes are fixed by next meeting I can show you.

That seems pretty cool!
If you need any help with your brakes, let me know.

Both Placer County and El Dorado County are prime targets for car thieves coming out of the Sacramento area. We typically have higher end cars, and they know we have less cops to cover a much larger area than a city. It is very easy to get complacent when you live a a nice area where you feel safe, but those are the areas thieves hit first. I could care less if someone stole my Tundra. I have insurance to cover that. My insurance will never cover all the aftermarket parts, time/labor, and the blood sweat and tears I have into building my Jeep. A kill switch is a very good idea for a Jeep.
