Public invited to Eldorado National Forest Open House to discuss Off-Highway Vehicle grant applications

Placerville, CA - The Eldorado National Forest will be submitting applications for Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) Cooperative Funds for the upcoming 2015/2016 grant cycle. The Forest is developing preliminary applications to the Off Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Division which includes a strong emphasis on trail maintenance and repair, law enforcement across the four Ranger Districts, printing and distribution of the Motor Vehicle Use Maps, restoration of impacted areas, planning, and education.

As your ideas are important for developing our proposals, the Forest will be hosting an Open House on February 10 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM to discuss the proposed preliminary grant applications. This Open House will be held at the Eldorado National Forest Supervisor's Office, 100 Forni Road, Placerville, CA 95667. You can call (530) 622-5061 for directions.

The Eldorado National Forest has been successful in being awarded grants from the OHMVR Division in previous grant cycles. The grants have helped address trail repair and clearing of downed trees on over 300 miles of OHV routes and law enforcement patrol on an additional 900 miles of native surface roads on the Forest, provided for the printing of free Motor Vehicle Use Maps, as well as other planning, development, and restoration activities.

Once completed, the preliminary grant applications will be available on the OHMVR website on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 through Monday, April 4, 2016 for review and comment. To review the grant applications submitted go to http://olga.ohv.parks.ca.gov/egrams_ohmvr/user/home.aspx.

The public may provide electronic comments to the Eldorado National Forest (applicant) by e-mailing both Cindy Oswald at [email protected] and carbon copying (cc) the OHMVR Division at [email protected]. You may also send written comments, suggestions, or letters of support for the applications to Cindy Oswald, Eldorado National Forest, 100 Forni Road, Placerville, CA 95667.

It would be a good one to show club support. I'll make arrangements to go.

If I can't build it, then it's something that should be bought.

Grant meeting was interesting. Talked to Kyle, a few other forest service people, 2 enforcement rangers, and a few people from other clubs. Also got some info on a pending chainsaw class, some strawberry updates, and some potential volunteer actions for the club to pursue.

-Grants. El Dorado NF is asking for about $75k in grants this year most of which will be spent on signage, map updates, and some materials for trade shows. Signs are the big steel and fiberglass things that can be out in the elements and will be permanent. Plan calls for basic OHV safety info and some info about areas and trail closures. A new map is due out in June and I am told it will have some references on it so it will be more legible than the current ones. The forest service is seeking about $3k to get a branded EZ-up, banners, flags, and some table cloths to set up at fairs and trade shows.

-Strawberry trail. Kyle is being put in charge of the trail rehab. Unfortunately, due to the inclusion of the something leg frog, most projects that weren't underway were pushed back a year. Currently Kyle is aiming for a trip with the necessary road engineers, etc. for this spring/summer to start the scoping for the projects. I have offered the club as a taxi service for him and any forest service people who need access to expedite the project. Scoping and environmental docs typically take a year to complete so trail repairs are summer of 2017ish.

-Chainsaw class. First Aid is required for the class but can be completed after doing the chainsaw portion. Currently planning a mid march single day class. Interest appears to be high form a motorcycle club in Amador so this might turn into 2 options for days to take it. I will provide more info when I get it from Kyle.

-Additional Volunteer options. As mentioned in the grant section, the EL Dorado NF is seeking a booth setup branded with the forest service logos. With this they will be seeking volunteers to accompany staff to various trade shows and fairs. These volunteer hours, much like the road patrol hours will expand their recreation budget. Some actual wheelers in the booth and rigs with door magnets at a few shows would be worth our time. Additionally I have asked Kyle for a range of dates that we might add a 4th road patrol.

I will discuss all of this at tonights meeting.

This sounds interesting in that we can help with some of their activities. The frog [leg] issue sounds like an excuse, but I guess we have to see if they are locally endangered or there's millions of them around the corner somewhere.

The chain saw class is final coming, which seem to be a long time. I have my first aid/CPR done & would very much like to get into the first of the class(es) offered.

I think the more we can volunteer for forest service activities, the more chances there will be for roads staying open & opportunities for us & others to enjoy what we love.

Good report Kris & keep up the good relations with them. I don't care for frog legs anyway.
