I'd say a soft top is more versatile. I've got the soft top, hard top & a safari top and use all three. I've cracked the hard top while rock crawling, twice. Now I just put black duct tape on it. The upside is I can lock up the Jeep. The safari top is nice for summer time doors-off use. We don't get much summer rain here so that's generally not a problem. The soft top can be used year round and can even be used as a safari top by rolling up the rear sail panels and tying down the rear spreader bar.

Why can't you run the hard top and pack the soft top?

I used to wheel a lot. . .

Dual tops come with the hardtop installed and the soft top packed away inside. Perhaps look around at how they do it.

Dual top option ships with the soft top completely connected but laid down, inside the hard top.

My YJ only had one top ... the canvas. At freeway speeds we called it the "tent in a hurricane". MAN, it was loud!! But I still wish I could take the top off the XJ.
