I know they've been out for quite a while but I never figured I had much use for it until now. Teddi wants to be able to watch tv while sitting out in the backyard. This seems like a good way to do it and be able to watch all the shows we've got recorded on the DVR.
I figure I should be able to get rid of the extra Uverse box we have and offset the cost a little too.
I'll let you know how it works when I get it.

What model router did you get? Is it blue lights on top of the router? It looks like some Netgear routers have an option in their configuration to turn off the blue lights on top. I dont' have one like that to look at though. Take a look here - http://www.fixya.com/support/t2027736-b ... s_turn_off

I had a slingbox for a while it worked well. I sold it since I don't travel far away form my big TV to need it. If I traveled more it would be nice since you can watch your home TV form anywhere you can get online not just your home network. Also DISH Network (who owns sling media) just realesed a new DVR the 922 it includes a built in slingbox.

Hi Guys!
Newbie here, but this thread caught my eye immediately--no, not just because it was the one on the top LOL--anyway, I work for the US Gubment overseas in Germany and I've been really wanting to watch American TV. The Slingbox made this possible and I absolutely love it. I'm not sure I would have one if I didn't live so far away from home, but now I can watch all my favorites from anywhere on the computer or in my living room with the SlingCatcher.
The ability to control my DVR in California is just way too cool. There are net lags (naturally since it's traveling so far) at times and once in a while the stream will degrade such that the picture is pixelated a bit, but it usually only last a few seconds and then back to normal. The most important thing to understand is that on a home network the connection will be fantastic. Placeshifting/streaming over the net to remote locations can be tricky. It all depends on the upload stream from the Slingbox location and the download stream at the remote location. I'm fortunate that my DVR and Slingbox in Cali have an upload of 40MB and my download stream in Germany is 6MB. This combination is absolutely fantastic for me to watch and control the DVR with no problems at all.
I made a quick video to show everyone how it looks if you are interested:
(there is no vulgar content in the video--I promise. Just me with my camera)

Yes. Essentially the slingcatcher replaces the need for a computer. It would have been just as easy for me to hook up a spare computer, but my wife didn't want a computer in the living room... Go figure! Naturally, I do whatever my wife tells me. I may be the head of my household, but she's the neck that turns the head. :gay:

I got my Slingbox last night and got it hooked up. So far I like it! Over the home network the speed and picture quality is really good. Using the Slingplayer mobile app on my iphone the picture isn't quite as clear and response time for the virtual remote is a little delayed but overall its very usable.
