Offline PHPBB3 automatically comes with forum member definitions for the most common bots and puts them into their own special group. I could delete these bot members and they would not show up as being signed on. It wouldn't stop them from scanning the forum though. They'd just show up as guests.
I could probably ban them like you say, but then none of our content would be searchable on Google.

Offline I made a mod to the activity stats mod and got rid of the bots in the "users over the last 24 hours" stats. They still show up in the registered users section though. I'm still looking for a solution for that part.

Offline The bots are gone, but not forgotten.
I found a hack to remove them from the list of online registered users. But this being a "hack" and not a complete "mod" there's one little quirk I found. The bots are still counted in the number of online users even though they aren't listed by name. So if you count up the number of names it may not always match what the board count says.
