Do I want a free boat?

Kelly's aunt and uncle want to give us there old boat. They say it's a perfect family boat. Sounds like fun. We live 10 minutes from Rollins Lake. I have the truck to pull it. Then I start thinking about insurance, registration, and another motor to maintain and I'm not sure. I don't know much about the boat. It's a late 70s early 80s vintage ski boat. 90 HP Merc. Knowing her uncle, it was meticulously maintained and is great shape, but they haven't used it in a few years. I've never had a boat. Worked at a marina every summer in high school so I know my way around them. Is it worth it?

My 2 cents...It will be fun the first year and then it will sit in your yard taking up space and getting even older..

I had a 19 foot open bow with the 90 HP Merc engine. The 90 HP is the 4 cylinder motor, which is pretty much bullet proof as long as you take good care of it (fresh oil, spark plugs, Cap, Rotor and plugs and wires every season)

It was a great "starter boat" boat for getting around the lake, fishing, & tubing. But you'll get frustrated if you load it with adults and try to pull a skier or a tube. There's just not enough poop in the 90 HP to get going with a boat load of people. BUT, it would be fine for a family your size.

Boat: "hole in the water, into which you throw money"

"the happiest day of a boat owner's life is the day they buy the boat and the day they sell it."

insurance will be the most costly part, but still not that much overall.

the real costs are fixing/maintaining if/when things break.

outboard motor parts are really spendy, and the old ones are hard to find.

i think that a boat is a lot of fun and not that much work . the memories the kids have from tubing and boarding would be priceless. and if you fish then thats another reason to get it.

I should have closed with, but if it's cheap enough and you keep the budget in check it can be alot of fun.

Back in college a buddy and I were partners in a ski boat. We sure got a lot of use out of it over a 4-5 year period before it got stolen. There was some maintenance but we were mechanical enough to do most of it ourselves. If I wasn't saving for other things tight now I would have a ski boat by this summer. As they say boat stands for "bust out another thousand" 😛
