Here's what we've got with Dot5 now.

Dan-H checked with Sergey who runs the JeepBBS website to see who they use. Here's what Sergey had to say.
-------------------------------------------------
This is a complicated question. Here is the hosting company that we use:
I am happy with them mostly. Once upon a time the company was called Ventures Online, and was one of the best if not the best web host. Then things turned tragic, then sour. After that things improved, but they probably will never be as good as it had been back in the glory days.
Ether way, I don't know anybody better. But if you want to search and to ask around, here is a good forum to discuss this sort of things:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/
I am not sure if Web HSP is running any kind of referral program (they used to back in the days) but if you decide to go with them, sure thing I appreciate if you drop my name, Sergey Nosov, or our domain name, jeepbbs.net.
Sincerely,
Sergey

i dont know how much space we need or how much data transfer we would need but it might pay to pay a little more for 99.9% network uptime. i dont know.

I'll see what I can do to start pulling together some basic info on the companies that are suggested.
Our next bill is due 6/1/2008.
Now is the time to get on it if we are going to change. The problem is most alternatives are 3 times (or more) the price. Please look for hosting services that are comparable to the summary Fred posted.
Also, Fred have you confirmed the .com domain has transferred to .5? We need the transfer to complete before moving. I'm sure the 30 day wait is over. Is the site available for us?

I just got off the chat line with Dot5. I'm being told now that posse4x4.org has been transfered to our account and its a technical glitch that the admin web tools say its pending. I've made a change to point posse4x4.org to the same ip address as posse4x4.org. It said it could take 24-48 hours to propagate through DNS.
I also reported the response time problem again. They'll look into it and get back to me within 48 hours. Everything takes 48 hours it seems.

Ok, so here's some real basic information. I guessed at what was important. Prices are pretty similar, the big differences are storage and monthly site transfer which I'm assuming is the same as bandwidth. Fred, how much are we actually using? (Give it a second to load...I attached the info as a picture)

Go Daddy Deluxe?
They are big (and do some really nice advertising!) and should have better support? It looks like $85 a year, but they should have multi year discounts just like Dot 5. Dot 5 is $60 a year, but around $150 for three years. Hopefully Go Daddy is something close.
Let's see what they do with the server lag, and maybe the .com name has better performance. Otherwise, how do we change the site to the new host? Will the board be down for a while, or is it transparent?

Our bandwidth usage so far this month is .35 GB but I would say that's fairly low. I think our performance problems have kept people away.
The Dot5 stats for our website usage don't appear to be accurate. They say we're only using .04 MB. But the HTML files and databases take up about 2 GB on my computer.

Go Daddy Economy may be enough for a while too.

I wouldn't expect the .com name to work any faster than .net. Both names will point to the same ip address and the same files and databases.

I've never moved a website before but I would expect a bit of downtime. The static website can be copied ahead of time. The forums and gallery use a database. The database will have to be backed up and built/restored on the new server.
Do any members for frequent participants on our website have experience with changing hosting companies?

Some thoughts, likely needs some tuning. might be a first cut.
1) Plan the migration in stages, and allow for some parallelism.
2) Consider using one company as your DNS registrar, but get a different company for hosting. This makes future hosting changes easier as you won't need to transfer the domain name which can take weeks. To change hosting only involves updating DNS entries which take 12 to 36 hours to propogate.
3) Buy another temporary domain name (posse4x4temp.com) , and use this name until its "done". Once everything is working, update the DNS entries to point the posse4x4.org and .net domains to the new hosting IP.
On the new hosting company
4) install the forum software and make sure it runs with whatever DB version is supplied by the hosting company. Setup a temporary (throwaway) forum just for the transition. Once you are happy the forum works as you expect, start the rest of the transition. If you are unhappy with the setup, cancel the hosting contract and find another host.
5) clone the static content from old site to new site.
6) lock down changes to Photo albums, articles etc (everything except for forums) on the old and clone to the new. open up the new site for changes to these things (everything but the forum)
7) test run transferring the forum from one host to another, but don't open it up to more than one or two users.
Once you know this goes smoothly, do it again for real, but take the current forum down, move it and bring it up.
The throwaway forum on the new site can be used to coordinate outage times and give the web junkies someplace to talke while the main forum is down.
8) At this point stuff should be up and running. Archive everything from the old hosting company just in case something was overlooked.
Closed Mondays.
