We've lived in our house for almost 19 years and I've never thought much about the dryer vent. A few years ago I read about someone in the neighborhood having a dryer vent fire and thought I should have it cleaned. I finally got around to calling dryerventcare.com today and Greg was able to come out right away. I was amazed at how much stuff came out of there.
(Yes, the concrete really is green. I didn't get a chance to power wash it with the water restrictions we had last year.)
Greg measured the airflow and temperature at the outside vent before and after the cleaning, before 900 cfs @ 81 degrees, after 1500 cfs @ about 100 degrees. The dryer should be a lot more efficient now but most importantly it should be less likely to catch on fire. He also said everyone should put a smoke detector in laundry room.

I do this for people in my little Handyman business. Whats amazing is that some neighborhoods have none and some incredible amounts (like the Parkways). In one case, the airflow was so restricted it overheated the dryer and the thermal fuse blew. I use an electrical fish tape with brush ball on the end.

That's what Greg was saying too. Some neighborhoods just have more buildup because of the way the homes were constructed. He said he hadn't seen much of a problem in our neighborhood, but I had heard about that fire a while back.

X2. Sounds like me and bender are running straight headers while the rest of you got a catback exhaust system setup for your dryers.
Maybe that's the problem and I had a cat in my vent.

Just a thought while we are on the home repair subject...
Don't forget to wash down the condenser coil on that big AC unit sitting next to the house. I get calls every year for blown AC fuses and capacitors. Seems the coils get dirty, power consumption goes up and things blow. It will save you money on electricity and make the unit last longer.
I've also got some really good Ant Bait granules that the bug guys use. The ants take it back to the colony and kill them all. You can't buy it in California without a license, but you can order it from Florida or eBay. I buy it by the case. Not to sound like a TV commercial, but its really good. My cost is 13 bucks and you will never use it all. Share it with your neighbors and kill the suckers. You could probably split it with someone and still never run out.
Water heater anodes? I've got some extras laying here. Google it for more information.

Do you just sprinkle it on an ant trail? Is it safe around pets? Our yard gets infested with ants every year. They don't come in the house too often but I would like to wipe out the ones outside, they take over our patio and that's where we like to eat our meals during the nice weather. (ie. we party out there alot).

Yea, you just sprinkle it on the ant trail and they carry it back to the colony. Its little granules like grains of sand. Its probably poison to pets and has a smell to it, but you use such a small amount in the patio cracks, its surely safe. Its called MaxForce Fine Granule Insect bait. I bought a 6 pack for $80 from ePestSolutions.com and have a few to sell for $13 each.

Yea, I don't leave town. My business name is "Folsom Only Handyman", but I always make exceptions for friends. I stopped building fences and painting, to much work. Mostly little stuff. Really save people money fixing appliances. The record so far is $8000. Guys AC unit went out and the contractor wanted to sell him a new unit, when it was a $50 capacitor. Just finished a spa cover for a lady. She painted it as I built it. Yesterday was a garage door opener, sink drain and leaking shower faucet. Today I'm running some TV cable, changing the some front brake pads/rotors and a valve cover gasket and looking at a lawn mower. I'm really not running a real business, its more just fun while the kid is in school. I charge about $30/hour and have never advertised. Been doing it for a couple years and its surprising how much you learn. Being a stay at home dad, you just need to get out of the house.
