We seem to have more fishermen here now. I'm excited about planning a club fishing trip. Please list your preferences...
1. bait, lures or flies
2. river, stream or lake
3. local or travel/camping
4. other?
I'm going to plan a trip around these preferences and of course beginners and kids are welcome to join in. It should be a lot of fun.

That's why I like Red Lake. You can fish the lake with lures and bait, you can fish the stream with flies, there's a group camp spot right there, and hit's a short drive to Deer Valley Trail. But, I'd like to leave the trip open to car camping so I can bring the family and others can come without their 4x4s. If anybody else has any suggestions for lakes/streams/trails, let's hear them.

* fish and game puts in large cutthroat brooding stock from Heanan Lake
* strong population of larger brookies
* good camping
* good location within 1/2 hr or less to other streams /rivers, just over pass can get to woods or caples lakes in short time

We have always had good luck at Lake Kirkwood whether from the shore or in our canoe. There is camping right there, but we have never camped there as we have just gone up for the day or had been camping at Silver Lake. We have had limited success at the inflow at Caples lake and fishing from the dam at Silver lake. With the size of those lakes the best fishing and biggest fish would be caught trolling.
If you get out toward the Bodie/Lee Vining area go try up 108 towards Yosemite at Tioga Lake. We fished there this past summer one evening and my wife and daughter we catching fish so fast I could hardly get my pole in the water. Very nice size fish too.
Though teaching kids how to fish means less fishing for you, it does pay off. We started my daughter at 2 years ago at 6 with her own pole and by last summer at 7 she was able to cast, recognize when a fish is on the line, and bring it in with losing it. This year she will learn to do her own bait and I can get back to doing some fishing on my own. Oh wait. My son will be 6 this summer and wants to learn. Looks like more time teaching, less time fishing.
How do you guys keep your kids from getting bored? After 45 minutes to an hour they are itching to start throwing rocks in the water, the usual "I'm Bored", Wanting to wander off and go climb on rocks. etc. I imagine thats just the nature of a kid being a kid. I believe i was the same when when I used to go fishing with my Grandfather. The rocks were just calling my name to be thrown!

If I take the kids fishing, it's solely for the kids' benefit. We leave when they get bored. I try to take them to places they will catch fish and stay excited about the hobby. If we go camping and the chance of catching fish is "iffy", I won't bring the kids' gear. If we go somewhere I think there's a good chance, I bring the gear. I try to keep it productive and fun until they are old enough to understand that real fishing isn't all about the "catching", it's about the fun of the trip and getting outdoors.

If the goal of trip is family fishing, go where you know Fish & Game planted 😀

I'm pretty much up for any kind of fishing!
I'm new to fly fishing and love it. And I'm more than happy to bait and lure fish the lakes. I got a 2 pole stamp this year so I can do both at the same time.
I've had lots of luck at Silver and Caples and I love camping off hwy 88.
There is a nice FREE camping spot a bit up from silver and before Kirkwood I like to stay at.
