We use to have a 24' 1999 Safari Trek class A. We liked it because of it's unique bed that raised up to the ceiling when not in use. It made the 24' motorhome have the daytime living space comparable of a 34' motorhome. This motorhome turned out be very difficult and tiring to drive. I think the wheelbase was too short and narrow for such a tall and wide motorhome. After getting our current motorhome we've come to believe our Trek was also a lemon. We constantly had trouble with it even before we hydrolocked the engine.
Our current motorhome is a 26' 2006 Itasca Cambria class C. Itasca is made by Winnebago who sells the same model called the Aspect. This motorhome is so easy to drive and we feel much more relaxed when we get to our destination. I tell people it drives like a loaded one-ton crewcab longbed pickup.
Ours is a little different than the typical class C in that it doesn't have the bunk over the cab. We specifically chose this type of motorhome so we could park it next to our house. It's not as tall as most class C's so we're able to fit it under the eaves of the house.
Our Cambria is built on a Ford E450 chassis. I really like having the van cab with the regular driver and passenger doors. Plus the engine is moved forward in a more traditional van layout. Our Trek had the engine under a "doghouse" between the driver and passenger seats and made it much more difficult to work on. I also feel our class C would be safer in an accident than our class A was. It's got airbags, a steel bumper and I'm sure all the Ford designed crumple points in comparison to the simple fiberglass front fascia on our Trek.
One thing we're not real thrilled with is the rear corner bed. It's a bit of a pain to crawl in and out of bed. But in this size range there aren't too many other options for a dedicated sleeping area.
If I was asked for my opinion regarding a class A versus a class C, for something 30' or less I'd recommend the class C.
My Mom ended up buying a 30 or 32 foot 2006 Winnebago class C on the same E450 chassis - the typical type with the overhead bunk. I got a chance to drive hers and it felt much like driving our 26' class C.

Sorry...not much help here. I am more familiar with travel trailers, 5th wheels and soon to be toy haulers. Whatever you do, do your homework. The standards in the RV industry are all over the place and quality can vary greatly from one manufacturer to another and even within brand to brand with the same manufacturer. Talk to a lot of people that own and get their opinion. There is an organization called http://www.RV.org that puts out a CD for every model produced for that particular year and gives the good and the bad along with rating the manufactures. Its like $90, but could save you on a 40K mistake by having the right information especially when buying used.

It sounds like what you have Fred is exactly what we have been looking for. We aren't in a huge hurry, so we'll keep looking until we find what we are looking for.
If you'd like to take a look at ours sometime let me know. We could even take it out for a test drive.
