Cows have started producing energy in Sacramento County.
The Sacramento Municipal Utility District began using power from a manure digester at Cal-Denier Dairy on Monday. ItΓ’β¬β’s the first manure digester in the county.
About 120 pounds of cow urine and manure are stored in a covered lagoon and gradually releases methane, a greenhouse gas and energy source. The gas is sent to a 65-kilowatt generator, where it is burned to produce power.
SMUD pays about 10 cents per kilowatt-hour for the power and contributed 13 percent of the cost of the $700,000 digester system. Other funding came from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the California Energy Commission

120 lbs of cow poop and pee driving a 65-kilowatt generator? Must be a typo.
