Hey Guys,
I don't know if you remember that last April some of my buddies and I kayaked a section of the Middle Yuba with Rob and Keane's driving help. We are headed back to complete the portion we couldn't access before...now that there are some special releases from the Jackson and Milton Reservoirs.
Wondering what Henness Pass Road is like between Camptonville and Jackson Reservoir. The first place we need to reach is about 10 miles west of Jackson Reservoir on Henness Pass Road, where we will drop our shuttle vehicle for our hike out of the canyon. Then we're heading up to Jackson from there. Is there a faster way to get to our take-out location? I see a road coming out of Downieville that links up with Henness Pass....is it worth it?
One of the two trucks we have to get up there has decent clearance but is not a 4x4...so keep that in mind.

I did some asking around and you should be good on Henness Pass Road. I didn't find anyone that has been on it this summer, but everyone said it is generally a well maintained dirt road. Other suggestions on getting to below Milton included Gaston Road out of Washington and up around Bowman Lake. I've driven this and it's fine. That'll be some of the same road we took you guys on and that's how Rob and I came out that day. You could also go through Truckee and out Jackson Meadows road. That's paved for most of the way.
One guy knew about the road that comes out near Downieville, but I couldn't find anyone that had ever been on it. Without a 4x4 I think I'd skip it this time around.
The guys all suggested you keep an eye on the weather. It looks nasty out there today and it wouldn't surprise anyone if there was snow at Jackson Meadows after this weekend. On a club campout at Jackson Meadows around this time of year we got some snow and it was stupid cold. I think you could be in for the same sort of weekend.
If you get stuck, at least you know who to call. 😀 Good luck, between the releases from the dam and the potential for some solid rain, you may be there at about the perfect time.

Looks like we found some pavement to get us about 5 miles from our destination that joins Henness Pass Road. Pliocene Ridge Road gets us most of the way there before it joins Henness Pass.
I'll let you know how the trip goes. We plan to drive up tonight, boat tomorrow all day, and drive home Friday night. Hope it's good in there.

Keane,
Thanks for the info about this one. We had a good time in there. I merged a very small amount of footage from the trip with a bunch of stuff I did the rest of this season for all to see. This Middle Fork Yuba stuff begins around minute 6 of the video, but the beginning is great stuff, too. The beginning includes 3 other kayaking trips including the East Fork Kaweah, Upper Cherry Creek, and Fordyce Creek.
The rest of you may be curious what all those crazy kayakers are doing on Fordyce when you are not around.
