I was bored, and knew that even though my little 22RE, 2.4L 4cyl, 30year old engine pushed a top notch 115hp at 4800RPM and 140ftlb or torque at 3600rpm when it was new... I was curious at how much torque I really have, at the wheels, on the trail... because, really, torque is what you want for crawling.
To figure that out, you need to multiply all of your gears together. So for me...
Diffs - 5.29
Transmission 1st gear - 4.31
4Lo transfer case - 2.28
Marlin Crawl Box - 4.7
So, I have a final gear ratio of 244.32:1
We then take that gear ratio and multiply it by the torque of the engine... in this case, 140... to get....
34,205.32 ftlbs of torque that my 4runner puts out. Given, that is with a new engine, at 3600rpm. I crawl around 1200rpm, and with a 30 year old engine. I would need to get dyno'd in order to get accurate numbers, but still.... to think a little 2.4cyl could put out 34,000 ftlbs of torque is awesome.
What does Jeff's dodge put out with his atlas? What do your typical i6cyl 4.0L jeeps put out?
