It doesn't seem to be making the national news like Hurricane Gustav, but Hurricane Ike isn't looking good for my family near Galveston, TX right now. I just found out Brazoria County where they live has declared mandatory evacuations by 6:00 am tomorrow morning, our time.
They plan to hit the road some time tonight after they get their stuff packed up. They're expecting 130 mph winds out of this storm.
If that's not enough, my 10 year old niece swallowed the metal blade from a pencil sharpener yesterday and has been hospitalized since yesterday. She still hasn't passed the blade but was released from the hospital this afternoon. The dr's say the blade has reached the large intestine which is good because it's thicker and less prone to damage than the small intestines and the blade should pass right through. I can't help but think the dr's just wanted to get her out of the hospital before the storm hits.
If you're curious about the Houston news a couple of their local stations have websites at http://www.click2houston.com and http://www.myfoxhouston . If you see or hear of Alvin, TX or Seabrook, TX that's where they live.
And if that's not enough, my sister's house is currently uninhabitable because of mold. They're actually hoping a well placed tornado will level the house.

Yeah, this storm looks like it's going to take it's toll on the TX gulf coast. Last I heard it's suppose to make landfall near Freeport which is just south of Galveston and only about 20 miles from my Moms & sisters house.
My brother's house in Seabrook will be vulnerable to the storm surge. His place is about 2 feet above see level.
They've all evacuated so all that's left to do is sit back and wait.

Everyone in my family made it through the hurricane but they have not returned to their homes yet to assess the damage. Mom got a report from one of their friends who did go by the house and things look pretty good for them. My brother lives in Seabrook closer to the ocean so they may have had some flooding.
