Pretend you're looking to buy a vehicle. You make a deal through email but can’t find a time to meet with the seller until a few days later. By deal I mean you’ve negotiated a price and if the truck is as advertised, it’s sold. However, no deposit has changed hands. In the meantime a different potential buyer shows up that can get there sooner. As a seller how would you handle the situation?
I’ll withhold my opinion since it’s not so hypothetical for me and I’m a bit pissy about the whole thing right now. 😕

A deposit changes everything though.

I guess you're right that's how I deal with it too, but I'd at least make it clear to a potential buyer. I was under the impression that we had a deal and he was fine with waiting until I could get there. I guess if it's meant to be it'll work out. Still miffed by it. I could have skipped the meeting last night and put a deposit on the truck if he would have been a bit more up front about his willingness to wait.

Remind me of that if you're ever selling me something. Where I'm from a deal is a deal.

Contract law states you must exchange consideration during an agreement for a contract to be enforcable (among other things).
What you had was a "gentleman's agreement". This carries no binding requirements.
If you want something bad enough you'd just have to sacrafice and make time to get to it. I know this sounds harsh (especially with how far you'd probably have to go to meet someone), but in many cases it's a seller's market.
I had to give up my Friday night to test out my Tundra. My only other options were to have one shipped from Florida, or sit and wait for one I was specifically looking for to become available (and not have my Tacoma to drive around in the mean time.
Getting a real bargin on a Tacoma or Frontier will be hard because many other people are looking for them. The used car market is pretty hot right now because of the economy.
How about posting some specs of what you're looking for and I'll see if I can dig something up for you to check out?

Yeah but do you have any respect for the seller now?
You are correct that the term "gentlemans agreement" may be passe' in today's world... 😥

I thought about asking for a ride along from some big dudes. He wants cash. Fortunately I have a contact in the local sheriff's dept that's going to assist in the sale and my brother is going along if it works out.

The email thing is weird in my mind. I asked him several times for a phone number but he just kept answering my email questions without giving me a number.
Either way...I'm back on for Sunday!

I move to have a new officer position: Seargent at Arms
Our meetings don't get that rowdy ... yet. No telling with the new administration, though.
