I will be camping on Fordyce next weekend and it is supposed to rain all weekend. Last year on Fordyce it rained like no tomorrow and the cheap Coleman tent I had collected more water on the inside than I think was on the ground outside 😯

I need to buy a high quality tent before the trip. I will be buying from REI for a couple reasons. One, they sell quality tents and they have a great return policy. One of the tents I am looking at is a Marmot "Limelight 3P". It retails for about $250.00. I want a 3 person tent.. I don't want to small or two big. I want one that sets up fairly easy. Most important is it needs to be quality and water proof.

Does anyone have any recommendations on brands or the quality of Marmot tents?

I don't have any experience with a Marmot tent. The only "quality" tent I've ever owned was a Kelty and REI sells them as well. It's one of their Trail Dome tents. I like it a lot except for the floor and it's a little short. The floor always seemed a bit flimsy and I finally ended up ripping it a bit but it's been at least 4-5 years (maybe longer). I've camped in some serious rain in it. I have a friend that has a Mountain Hardware tent that also seems to do well in the rain. The one thing I wish mine had is a nicer vestibule under the rain fly. I think that would be extra handy with dogs so you could dry them off before they get in. Also, free standing is the only way to go with a tent. Staking the rain fly is on thing, having to break out the stakes every time you set it up is another. If you get the Marmot, let me know how it does. It looks like it has a nice vestibule, is free standing, and it looks like a nice floor. Doesn't look like you have any privacy when the rain fly isn't on though. I'm looking for a family sized tent that does well in the rain and still have some of my dividend left. 8)

I've heard nothing but good things about the marmot. I've heard that the Kelty tents have gone down hill lately. Just what I'm hearing from some of the scouts and parents. I need a couple of good tents too.

I will never buy a cheap tent again. Just not worth it. A high quality tent will outlast 4 or 5 cheap tents.

I have had my REI tent for over 5 years. It is like new and have never had an issue is any weather that I put it in. I was even dry on that Fordyce run. The tent was sitting in 4" of water. It is a 4 season tent so it can handle the high winds and snow. For summer time, when staying warm is not really an issue, I use a larger $50 tent because I like to be able to stand up inside.

I have the 2 http://www.rei.com/product/739354 but I would get the 3 if I was to do it again...just for the space. It's bigger but not huge. http://www.rei.com/product/739349

I didn't see that one. I might take a look at it when I go to REI on Sunday. That 3 person one looks perfect. I really want the free standing pole system. You really need to quit planning these trips in the rain so I don't have to worry about a water proof tent 😯 I am starting to think you are crazy rasta No top on the Jeep this year, so I will be getting wet like the rest of you!!

I ended up buying from REI. I got the Marmot Limelight 3P and I picked up a Big Agnes "Encampment" sleeping bag and Thermalite sleeping pad. First time I have ever spent $500.00 on a tent sleeping bag, and pad. I was going for water tight and quality this time instead of going cheap like I normally do.

Coldest night of my life....no joke. It snowed over 3 feet on us overnight at the base of Thousand Dollar Hill.
