Are you looking for "enter at your own risk" type stuff or just family fun? For family mine fun I think Empire Mine State Park is a decent way to kill a few hours.

The Sixteen to One Mine in Alleghany also offers tours. I've never been but it looks cool. It's quite a bit farther drive though. You have to make reservations and they don't say how much it costs.
