We've got critters running around our house. Tonight we heard dog noises (steps and panting). My dog was getting anxious. I'm thinking coyotes. I grabbed the gun and flashlight, but couldn't see anything with the flashlight I've got. I need something to light up the area. Any recomendations?

I used to wheel a lot. . .

Let me introduce you to my other "hobby". Check out http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb for everything you've ever wanted to know about flashlights.

Some of the things to consider are:

Do you want a flashlight for shining long distances or do you want more of a flood light?

What kind of batteries would you prefer to use? D's, C's, AA, CR123

Is runtime important, or are you strictly interested in brightness?

Do you want variable brightness or just one mode?

Do you want something pocketable or is something the size of a 3 or 4 cell Maglite acceptable?

What's your budget?

Were you at the Meadow Lake campfire when I brought out my modified 2 D cell Maglite?

This is the led unit I put in it.

http://www.malkoffdevices.com/shop2/ind ... 6aviklpr8g

I also modified the tailcap and spring to allow me to run three AA batteries in it instead of two D batteries. This increased the brightness but reduces the run time.

If you want to get real serious about lighting he makes a 3 led module too. 8)

I've got these for something to carry around in my pocket.

https://www.4sevens.com/product_info.ph ... cts_id=502

https://www.4sevens.com/product_info.ph ... cts_id=257

And I've got a couple of these too. They're a really nice bright but small flashlight.

The downside is the CR123 batteries, but if you order online they're not too expensive. Read about about proper use of lithium batteries before going this route though. You may decide not to do it.

Long distances would be more practicle around my house

"FAM" wrote: What kind of batteries would you prefer to use? D's, C's, AA, CR123

I want readily available batteries or rechargable.

"FAM" wrote: Is runtime important, or are you strictly interested in brightness?

Brightness is most important.

"FAM" wrote: Do you want variable brightness or just one mode?

One mode...bright and far.

"FAM" wrote: Do you want something pocketable or is something the size of a 3 or 4 cell Maglite acceptable?

Size isn't important (insert pun here).

"FAM" wrote: What's your budget?

$30 to $60 I think.

This could end up being a nice 2xAA battery flashlight too, but I haven't heard of anyone having one yet.

Very frustrating. I heard a loud comotion outside just now. I went outside again to check it out. Something ran by me, not 15 feet away. I couldn't see it with my flashlight 👿

It's gotta be coyotes. It was too big and fast to be racoons or skunks.

I think I remember you have a 2 or 3 D cell Maglight. One of these might be an economical way to go.

There's always the rechargeable spotlights which might not be a bad way to go for this type of thing. They're pretty inexpensive too.

That's what I'm talking about. Do you know anything about it? Is it good? The price is right 😀

No, I don't really know anything about them. I've been sticking with led flashlights, primarily pocketable ones.

I have seen my mom use her spotlight though. It wasn't the same as that one but was about the same price. The lens was about 8" in diameter and it required a shoulder strap, but that thing should shine to the back of their property which is a 1/4 mile deep.

You might try searching for "spot light" or "spotlight" over on candlepowerforums.

If you're willing to spend $60 and already have a 3 D cell Maglite that you'd like to keep using, the Malkdevices drop-in would be about the best way I can think of to go. This would be more convenient to take with you in the Jeep, but the spotlight might be the ticket for around the house.

Thanks for the help. I think a spot light would be perfect around here. I can use my Maglite for the Jeep. It's got a dead bulb in it right now.

About a half hour after my last post I heard them yipping just down the road. I'm mostly worried about them getting Jack (my pup). At the same time, I hope they lure away my other dog Buddy. Unfortunately, Buddy was locked in the garage, he got in trouble for running away again.

Anybody want a friendly Border Collie? He has a great personality, he's good with kids, and has an amazing jumping ability lol

But seriously, anybody want him? I'm afraid he will be going back to the SPCA.

You better come up with a plan on this one. I don't think Ben forgets much. You get rid of his dog, I would sleep with one eye open 😯

I know what you mean. Ben is the only reason we still have that stupid dog. It would tear him apart if we got rid of him. I feel sorry for the dog though, living his life chained up. But you can't leave him unchained for a minute or he's gone.

Maybe we'll try the electric fence and collar...

There is always the, "Buddy got hit by a car while you were at school"

Ben -- Daddy why does Buddy have a hole in his head?

John -- 🙄 it must have happened when he got hit by the car 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄

I thought about taking the dog to the SPCA and telling Ben that he ran away and didn't come back this time...but I can't do that to Ben.

I think we'll try the fenceless electric dog fence first. After that...it's game on!

Why not put some outdoor lights on your house. Mucho light and waaaaay more run time.

We had something outside our house last night too. The stupid cat was sitting at the door hissing and growling. I wandered over, turned on the light, and heard something rattle it's way over/under/around the fence. Sounded like a good excuse to fire off a few rounds so I loaded up the shotgun and woke up the neighborhood. Ok, so that last part was just for John and Rob but I hate getting woken up in the middle of the night. 😀

As soon as I got out of bed it was gone so I didn't see it, but I can't tell if I was dreaming or if it was the cat, but it made some sort of shreiking type noise. Almost like a hawk or eagle or something. That doesn't make sense though.
