A year and a half after moving in I finally have enough saved to start building a shop. Give me some recommendations! What do you guys have? What works? What doesn't?
Currently everything is up for discussion save for the width, 24' which is limited by location. Length is flexible but anything over ~35' will kill my budget.
-How tall should I go?
-Pole Barn or stick built?
-Truss or rafter?
-Slab thickness?
-Look like a barn or match the house?
-Insulation?
-Siding?
-Roofing?
-Doors?
-10,000 other things i'm forgetting?

For me, my new house came with a nice shop (one of the key features for me):
Matches the house
Not insulated (yet)
Lots of LIGHT
Slab floor with a 6 foot deep pit on one side (cement all the way, with an electrical outlet down in it)
Extra tall doors to get a tall Jeep in
Lots of room to the sides to put in shelving and for rolling tool boxes
Large workbench
and since I had it laying around, I am installing a propane fireplace insert for heat in the winter if needed
Right now, since I am still moving in, it has become a catch all for things that don't have a home yet. I still need to move my 20 foot storage container over which is home to most of the stuff (Christmas, catering, camping,... stuff)

I've never had the privilege to build a shop, but if I did, I would want it to match the surroundings. If I barn would work and is cheaper I'd be fine with that. I'd want insulation, air conditioning and some type of heater. Maybe even a wood stove. I would definitely want a shop sink of some sort in there as well.
I'd definitely go cheap on the structure to save money for the projects that will be worked on.
Um...what?

Scored a deal on some trusses. $300!!! 24ft width is now locked in as well as 5:12 roof pitch. Trusses are 2x6 top chord set up for wide spacing so pole barn it is. Im working on getting quotes for the rest of the materials (what isn't off the shelf stuff from home depot) and my budget is looking good. Not sure if it is 2-post-lift good but maybe if I can find some other savings.

We've been giving this some serious thought and we've come up with a few essential items.
- A bathroom is a must, separate ones for the girls would be nice
- A well stocked bar not far from the sink
- A commercial SubZero refrigerator
- A pool table
- A shuffleboard table
- A dart board (away from tire rack)
- A club room for all of us to meet
- A brick pizza oven and BBQ pit area
- Tables and chairs
- A stage for the band, or a sound system for the DJ
- A broadcast room for SpecialSoundMan, Jeff and Greg
- Heat in the winter, A/C in the summer
- At least one neon sign (you pick)
- A tire rack
- Oil changing pit
- Duel bays for club member repairs
This is just brainstorming for now. I'm sure there will be more to come when we think on it a little more.

Amazing ideas. Well thought out. But you forgot the Juke Box.
I used to wheel a lot. . .
