Rubicon Info

Greetings. My name is Howard and I am a member of Idaho Off Road 4x4 club. Three friends and I are planning a trip into the Rubicon with our wives on July 1-3. One member grew up in that area and has been on the trail many times. We all have built CJ's and YJ's, lockers, 37"+ tires, and are very trail savy and stewarts of the land.

My question today is, how much snow is there now and how much can we expect on July 1st? Idaho also has had 200-300% of normal this winter. We are looking very forward to visiting your area, but want to be sure we can play. Some snow is fine and can make the trail fun and challenging, too much= bummer?

Any info would be of great help. Maybe can even run into some of you when we visit.

Thanks,
Howard

Hello Howard. Where in Idaho are you coming from? I grew up in Idaho. Small town called Firth ID. Between Shelly and Blackfoot ID.

Josh.
We are coming from the Boise area. I grew up in the small town of Minidoka, 12 miles NE of Rupert. Grew up playing in the Arco desert.

After looking at your thread on the trip planed for 6/18, I am wondering if we should seriously think of delaying our trip till mid July? 😯

I am betting there will be a trail cut across by 4th of july. It is more a question of how built you are and how long you are planning on staying. If you'll be there a week with some built rigs, it could be fun and challenging.

A week? Is that because it might take an extra week for the snow to melt? lol All the rigs are pretty well built with the smallest tire being 37" and everyone is locked front and rear. Our trail leader is from NorCal and has run the trail many times so our main concern is how deep the snow will be. We are not opposed to running in some snow as long as we know it's passable. We're traveling a little too far to only get half way through the trail and then have to turn around.

I'd bet on a bit later than that, but that's just me. The snow up on top seems to take forever and stays real nasty for a long time.

Yes. A lot of the trail is in the shade all day. That makes it slow melting. It seems to me that old sleuce is one part of the trail to have snow for a while but it's by-passable via the slabs.

I'm more worried about the top. Last year when Larry and I went in I think it was the weekend after the 4th and it was tough going. Big water holes, big ruts, steep banks, etc. We made it, but this winter has been far worse than last year. Going to be interesting to see when the first rig makes it all the way through.

We went in only fathers day weekend last year. 🙂

Geez...now that I think about it you're right. I was thinking it was the Midnighter but now that I think about it that's not right. Disregard everything I said. I have no clue what I'm talking about. lol

With vacation planed, Grandparents lined up for kid setting, and everything, we would like to stay with our original plan. But, if it is not passable, go to plan B.
We have only 2+ days and 2 nights planned on the trail (my wife has plans and reservations in Tahoe, if I miss them I am a dead man) Will there be more info before June 25th?

I think you will be fine. People are cutting the trail further every day. 3 weeks and high 90s and low 100s will open that trail fast..As long as you are all on 37s and bigger with low air pressure you will be fine. How many of you are going.

There are 4 confirmed and 1 "maybe, but probably not". With limited time, and a small group, we figured we should have no problem making it through assuming we don't run into 20' drifts :banghead:

Off topic, but I think I need to steal the thread jacked simile for my clubs forum :hijack: We seem to have this problem too many times mr-green

2 days will be plenty of time. There are a few of us who run that trail and can do it start to finish in about 5 hours.

Thanks, glad you like it. I wish I could take credit for it, but all the work I do on it is behind the scenes.

Don't let Harvey be too humble, he is a great IT guy and spends many hours working on our web site. Now, if he just knew how to wheel---------- slap

We had a great trip! The weather was perfect and the trail was awesome! We went in on Friday and setup camp just past Little Sluice. That night 76cj5 and another from our group ran the sluice. A lot of fun watching them, and it took a lot of restraint to not use some of the hecklers as a traction aid :banghead: Saturday we went through Old Sluice and up to Buck Island. Hopefully next time the snow will be gone, so we can go all the way through. Oh well, that just give us a reason to come back, as if I really needed one. I will post a pic or two as soon as we get them all pulled together

Thanks to everyone on here for all the information.

Justin - It was nice meeting you on the trail. Hope you guys had a good run.
