Forwarded to our club:
To all concerned,
We need your help to develop viable SOLUTIONS to keep the Rubicon Trailโs Little Sluice from being permanently modified. Please bring your ideas, solutions, commitments to the Save Little Sluice SOLUTIONS Meeting.
Meeting: August 15th at 5pm
Lake Natoma Inn
702 Gold Lake Drive
Folsom, CA 95630
Some SOLUTIONS to the issues:
Human Waste - We'd like to see a Little Sluice group pick up the pett systems at the kiosk and set them up at sluice over the weekend.. Then pack everything up and take it back to the kiosk.
Oil Containment and Clean Up - We'd like to have an oil spill containment crew assigned at the sluice for the weekend, either to provide the spill kits to the person that spilled, or help them get the spill cleaned up, or in case of an inconsiderate trail user, have the crew clean up the spill for them. The box should be cleaned early in the weekend and also before the end of the day on Sunday.
Trail User Education - Talk to people, tell them what we're doing and why we're doing it.
Rule Enforcement - Watch the crowds and if anyone is breaking any of the posted rules, let them know. It does not have to be confrontational.
Water Quality - Water quality here is important, knowing that in the spring during the melt there is a lot of water going through Little Sluice, and into the lily pond. The lily pond drains into the Rubicon River.
Area Over-Use (camping) - permanent camp spot may be needed for the crew working over the weekend. This can be obtained by permit from the Forrest Service, and be run much like the Ellis Creek camp. Designing camp sites around Little Sluice with rings and tent areas will hopefully keep folks from camping too close to each other and spread out the camping to reduce the impact on the area.
Signs - Groups are willing to make signs to give users a guideline for using the area. Simple statements that have been valuable to the rest of the trail will work well here too.
Stay on the Trail * Pack out what you pack in and then some * Use portable sanitation * Clean up your spills * pick up your TP * Don't travel the trail if you vehicle is leaking
Please make every effort to attend the meeting. Please forward this email/information to all manufacturers, vendors, organizations and clubs.

I don't know what the answer for the Little Sluice problems is, but this doesn't sound quite right. Setting up designated camping areas with fire rings sounds like it would make LS even more of a destination for entertainment. I wonder if they'll have full hookups for my rv? It also sounds like these plans would rely on a lot more volunteer work to fulfill.

Just an FYI, this stuff is being brought up because there are talks once again about "fixing" the area by use of blasting equipment. Would probably be easiest if they could get a group of volunteer citizen police officers. They don't have the same authority as a regular officer, but the presence would be enough to keep people in line. All they have to do is walk up to a vehicle, write down the license plate number or green sticker number and then a ticket would be issued. One or two of those and things would probably calm down.
Out in the garage collecting parts....

I still think the party/gathering atmosphere is the main problem. Too many people congrigated there for too long of a period.
Reducing the gathering would also reduce the traffic on the trail. A lot of those people just wheel in to watch the show, not run the whole trail.
I used to wheel a lot. . .
