Any tree experts in the group???

My big oak tree in the front yard is weeping sap. It forms in drops on the ground. I did some research and found something called slime flux. It's caused by trauma such as extreme hot weather. But, that is not the problem...

The sap attracts bees 😯 There are thousands of bees in my tree. If you stand under it, it sounds like a loud electrical buzz. And, it's getting worse every day. It's starting to freak me out...

I used to wheel a lot. . .

Another possibility is aphids are eating the leaves and leaving something called honeydew behind.

Whatever it is, I want the bees gone and I don't want to loose the tree.

Go away bees 👿

my bet is on aphids.

If you have ants on the trees the ants "herd" the aphids around and harvest the sticky goo left behind.

any over the counter ornamental tree spray should take care of the aphids, but it takes a couple of doses to get them all gone gone.

It's aphids. We've had that with our oak trees for years. We started getting them treated yearly in January to prevent it and it's worked great. Clark Pest control or any other pest service should be able to do it. You can also do it yourself using something by Bayer. I'm going to try it this year.

Here's a topic on myfolsom.com where they talk about the issue.

The oak tree is HUGE!!! I don't think I could do it myself. It would take a big sprayer. I'll call my pest control company and see what they can do.

This stuff you don't spray the tree, you spray the ground within the dripline of the tree. Then the tree soaks it up through the roots. And you have to do it before the tree start budding out. The pest control companies, rather than spraying the ground, inject the stuff into the ground.

But I wonder if the pest control company can do anything about the bees right NOW!

Try a shotgun. I've never tried it on bees, but it works with most tree problems. It's especially effective on mistletoe. 😈 Please report back when you're done. 😀

light a fire under the tree and smoke out all the problems - bees, ants and aphids. maybe enough smoke will kill the aphids and solve the problem!

otherwise, rent a lift all and get r done!

fire and shotguns? - My kind of thread!

Work party?

We can all bring shotguns and stand in a circle around the tree! Rob is already a professional so he can use his pistol...

I wanted to see if John was country enough to give it a go. 😀

Plus, I'm just getting back to my roots. Better watch out or I'm going to start having flash backs to high school and try and get revenge for the royal whipping that Quincy used to put on us in every sport that we played them in. 😈

Update: I just talked with my pest control guy. He recomended the tree injections, that would kill the aphids NOW, and then the bees would leave. Spraying wouldn't do much for it right NOW. So, I might do the injection this time and then spray the Bayer stuff in the Spring.

That's good to know. I thought the treatment could only be done before the trees started to get their leaves.

The down side is it will cost almost $100 per tree.
