I think they typically cost $100+. If you only go once or twice a year, you can rent them for the weekend from REI for $10.

I got mine from REI for $129. They're 30" Atlas 930's. These were among the least expensive for my weight. For Teddi we ordered a set of 25" or 27" Atlas shoes in a starter kit which included the poles and a carrying bag. The price was $154.

Like George said, they're pretty inexpensive to rent. I decided to buy so I'd have them when I wanted to use them. We've had a few times we decided to go at the last minute but there weren't any shoes available to rent.

How effective are snow shoes? I can't ever seem to find some for my weight. That's what I get for being fat. 🙄 I've always wanted to buy a set on line but I have been scared. How far do you guys hike with them? Do they work good in powder?

Um...what?

I don't have a lot of experience with them yet but they seem to be pretty effective. My 30" shoes are rated for up to 250 lbs, including all gear carried. I've seen shoes as long as 35" but I'm not sure what their weight rating was.

Our distance is still pretty limited too. We need to get in better shape. Getting the snowshoes was one way to help with that while being out having fun.

We broke in our new shoes today at Union Valley Reservoir. The weather wasn't the greatest but we didn't let that stop us from having a good time.

Sportsmans guide currently has used military magnessium shoes for sale for under $100. I assume they'd have to be a heavier weight rating becuase of the gear they carry.
