To add to the plumbing problems we've had with this house, our water heater has been dieing a slow and painful death. It started leaking out the bottom so bad that you could hear it this weekend. No surprise because it wasn't properly installed, tilted to one side and was sitting on the ground. Today, we had a tankless water heater installed. We went Navien. It's somewhat new on the market, but the efficiency is awesome and the internals are solid (stainless steel). We went from an old electric model to a tankless gas. I'm hoping to cut my power bill in half and the gas usages shouldn't be terrible. Plus, it's covered under the 30% tax credit. 8) I'm all European now...tankless water heater and pex plumbing.

Yeah, it's got a massive burner. Runs the water through a heat exchanger and sends it to the system. It senses when the water moves and only heats as much as it needs. It's supposed to be waaaaay more efficient than having a tank of water sitting there heating and cooling all the time. It's rated at 98% efficiency. 😯 The exhaust coming out of the burner is cool enough to vent through a PVC pipe. We'll see how it goes in the shower tomorrow...

I think that in the long term with the tax rebate it will be quite a bit cheaper. I'm guessing that it will take about 2 years to pay for the difference. In the short term or without the rebate it was quite a bit more expensive. It was waaaay more expensive if you consider that I could have put an electric like we had back in by myself. I would have given this a shot, but it required running new gas lines and I'm not really comfortable with that.
So far...mixed reviews. Shower was normal. BUT...the hot for the sink in our bathroom doesn't work. I think the screen on it is a bit clogged so it doesn't flow much. My guess is that it is below the minimum flow requirement to turn on the heater. I'm going to clean it and if it doesn' work I'll get the installers back out.

I didn't read consumer reports. More internet info. It appears that they had some programing issues with the earlier models, but that seems to be worked out now. They have also got great feedback on their warranty issues. Most of the info I could find is typical complaints about tankless. Sometimes they'll hunt for a temperature when flow rates change. There will be a luke warm slug of water that comes through if the water is shut off and restarted. Bosch is a much more well known name in the industry. There were two huge selling points for me. The first is the stainless internals. Many others use copper. Our water is slightly acidic. We adjust the pH, but the corrosion on the copper pipes steered me toward something more durable. The second is the efficiency. It just flat out appears to be a better design. The exhaust coming of many of the units is so hot it requires special venting which can get real expensive. I'll let you know how my bills work out!
