Up until now the economy really hasn't effected us too much. I mean, we still have our jobs, our house hasn't lost any value from the purchase price, and all our bills are managable. I've heard all the sad stories and i feel bad for the people that are taking it in the shorts, but we've been fine, and I'm thankful for that. That was up until yesterday, when the full force of the bad eceonomy hit home...OUR FAVORITE CHINESE FOOD RESTERAUNT CLOSED DOWN

I know it's not your point...but have you really managed to stay that isolated from the whole economy mess? I would think as a teacher you're on the front line. I know Kelly got her layoff notice. The only reason she still has a "job" is because she agreed to take another leave of absence next year. Hopefully things will improve next go around and there might be something to go back to. Heck...Arnold even wants to close the State Park we like to walk at.
I spent all day yesterday in labor negotiations. Pretty scary to be in a spot where your contract is expiring at the end of the month. Management is herding us around like sheep and our only real option is a strike?
Any money I may have lost in my home doesn't matter a whole lot right now because I don't plan to sell it any time soon.

We got lucky when we bought our house. The previous owners were just walking away from it. We bought it below market value, and even with the falling values around us, our house has maintained it's purchase price as it's value. Plus, Loomis is still a desirable town to live in. Besides, we aren't one of those families that was living off of the economy. We weren't counting on our home value increasing rapidly, we bought well within our budget, and we waited for 18 years until we knew we could afford it. A lot of these forclosures were from people that got in over their heads with "goofy" loans and the hope of making some quick $$$ off the housing market. We have several friends that fell into that trap.
My position as an independent studies teacher is a special case, we are contract employees. Our school is the only school in the district that makes money on ADA and our overhead is very low. Also, I get paid per student, so it's never a budget issue. Lastly, I have seniority over a couple of teachers and I'm the only K-12 teacher. So, I'm pretty safe.
Elena has a bunch of seniority and because she works in special education her position is mandated by law. The only thing that will hurt is they might make her (and all adminisrators) take a couple of furlow days next year. That will cause a little financial discomfort, but nothing too drastic.
The biggest hit we feel are in gas prices and grocery prices. But, they seem to ebb and flow all the time anyways. I have no doubt that the economy is hitting others very hard, especially those who loose their jobs. But don't get me started on the budget issues. I have a real issue with cutting education and increasing welfare. If you cut education, there will only be an even bigger demand for welfare later. And if I can jump on the soap box for a minute, I think in tough times like these that the Government should be focusing on safety, education, and infrastructure ONLY! Seems to me that's mentioned in the constitution somewhere

But back to the more serious topic...can anyone recomend a good Chinese food resteraunt?
My favorite is Fat's, but it's pricey. The Loomis Chinese resteraunt is so-so. There's a good one in Auburn that Rob knows the name of. And Wong's Garden is pretty good in Roseville. But, none of those were up to Dignity Dragon (except Fat's).

Lost my assignment with my department. So instead of having day shift, SSM off, I move to probably MTW off working swing shift. Still have my job so still thankful though. The cuts for Sacramento County will be big and should be in the new in the next few days. Possibly 300 people in my department alone will be getting pink slips within the next month.

The union rep that works for one of our unions also reps the County. She was talking about the mess down there. Doesn't sound like there's anything that can be done. Rumor I heard is even giving up pay raises wouldn't do much do stop any layoffs. 😐

Did they close that pick up stix over in Folsom? I figured that place would make a killing. I lived off their stuff when I spent a month down in Southern California. I'm not sure it's great Chinese food, but it's decent and the price was fair. Wait for Alex to chime in. I'm sure he's got some random, hole in the wall place that looks like hell but has good food. 😀

Definitely wasn't implying anything different. Seems like you guys have done good. 8)
I know...I just wanted to make sure everyone reading knew where I stand. It's hard to convey such things on a forum. After re-reading it, I thought somebody might find it a little Arogant.

Yeah we are voting on the concessions next week. Looks like it will overwhelmingly pass so that should save some jobs but people will still be given pink slips. Just thankful to have one I suppose.
The real down side is working weekends which obviously is prime wheeling days. Oh well. Hope to keep hooking up with you guys.

We've been in our house for 18 years so we're not too worried about the house. But the layoff's our company had a few weeks ago sure hit close to home. Although we came out of it ok, we're still not confident there won't be another round of layoffs before things start getting better. So we're still "stashing our cash" and keeping expenses to a minimum.
Driving around Folsom it's saddening to see all the vacancies where businesses use to be. Just the other day we were driving through the Safeway parking lot and noticed Baja Fresh was closed. I didn't go there often but always enjoyed the meals I got there.
On a positive note, there are some new businesses popping up here and there. Last weekend we got frozen yogurt from a new place called Yogurt Hut. It was better than other yogurt places in Folsom and seemed to be lower priced. If anyone's interested in checking them out they're in the shopping center at Riley & Glenn, across the street from the city pool.

If John can get out of driving the shuttle bus you guys might be able to plan some mid-week trips and avoid the weekend crowds. I think there may be others who have weekdays off now and then too.

A ghost is still around.... just having to work harder with economic conditions.
I just got back from my 30 year high school reunion. An adventure for sure. Great to seek some folks that I have seen in 10-30 years. Always great to see everyone healthy.... and some sad stories of those who were really struggling due to the recession...
