To turn or not to turn

I'm putting new brake pads on the corolla this weekend. Assuming the rotors look good, should I have them turned anyway? I've read both ways. Assuming they look decent, I'm inclined to let them slide. They were new the last time the brakes were done. They are OEM and have been used with OEM pads only.

Staying on top of brake pads, I usually turn the rotors every other time I change the pads. But that's just me...

I consider brakes optional equipment so I don't mind cutting corners. 😀

That's what I've read a lot of lately too. Seems like a good compromise. You don't want to prematurely wear them down, but you also want a good surface.

Seems like a lot of the rotors out there are only designed to be turned once anymore. I usually look to see how much new rotors are and if they're in the $50/per range, I just replace them on the second set of brakes and skip the turning altogether. Not a big fan of taking in rotors to have them turned, you've got the vehicle down the time to take the brakes apart, take the rotors down and have them turned, then if you're lucky take them back on the spot and put them back together. I prefer to go to the store, buy the pads and the new rotors and be done with the whole project in about an hour or so.

Out in the garage collecting parts....

I don't want to put new rotors on because I've had terrible luck with non OEM pads and rotors. The OEM stuff just gets pricey quick. Before I started doing the brakes, Les Schwab went through 5 or so sets of their stuff. We averaged 3000-4000 miles before they started making noise. Usually it wasn't just a little noise. I told them them that every time it made a noise I would bring it back if they kept putting the non-OEM stuff on. It took them about two more times to take me seriously. I got more than my money's worth on their 30k mile guarantee before they switched to OEM stuff and I haven't had a problem since.
