Went to go to the store today in my Jeep and found it like this.
Passenger side tires slashed, driver's side tire with big screws in them and all scratched up everywhere.
Called placer county sheriff's department and when he came out he said this stuff never happens up here. Said it must have been some kids or someone that didn't like my political views....

Mike, this makes me mad as hell. Do any of your neighbors or businesses around you have surveillance cameras? If so, perhaps you might be able to find some clue as to who did it if you know approximately what time it occurred.
Placer County Sheriff's Department came and went to all the neighbors houses and the post office and also the Newcastle fire department to see if they have any cameras that they could see what happened. He said he doesn't think we'll ever know who did it unless someone confessed to it.
So I'll just cut it a loss and see what the insurance wants to do. I'm thinking a new paint job cause the scratches are to the metal and tires it might be close to a total so I'll weigh my discussion when it's come about....

So State farm insurance called me today to find out how I wanted to handle it and gave me 2 options the first is drive it to a place for repair and inspection (4 flats) not an option or have it towed at their expense to a shop for repair and inspection. I told them it has 4 flats and can't be driven and I'm not letting them tow it away they need to come here to look at it. They said ok it's 3 to 5 days out to get someone out to my house I said great.
5 minutes later they call back and say well that's too far for us to go so it needs to be towed again I said no I'm only 30 miles from downtownSacramento and 5 miles from Auburn where my agent is they said we'll see what we can do on Monday for you. They also suggested I have a friend that works at a shop come to my house and do an estimate for me.... I don't have any friends like that so I'll see what happens tomorrow.
Again I know they only have so much time to take care of this claim so the ball is in my court and we'll see what happens

Man does that piss me off. . . I guess the silver lining is That you havea good ins company that will hopefully treat you fairly. Live with the paint damage and put that $$ toward some good upgrades!
Reminds me of two related issues:
1) (I AM NOT DISCUSSING POLITICS): The political stickers are up to each of us, but as we know some people think those stickers are "offensive" and therefore valid grounds to do insane things (i.e. stand in traffic in the middle of the highway, or worse). Setting that aside, I recently read an article strongly suggesting that gun owners not put NRA, Glock, etc. stickers on their vehicles because that makes the vehicle an obvious target to steal firearms from. So I'm probably going to remove some stickers From my vehicle for that reason.
2) This weekend I had a guy I found on Facebook come over to discuss with me how to install a security camera system in my house. He was a very sharp guy and very knowledgeable about the quality/technology of cameras that you need. Basically you buy the system and he installs it for $150 per camera. The system involves a "brain box" that sits next to your home Wi-Fi router and contains a hard drive, and the system comes with as many cameras as you want to pay for. 4-8 seems standard. The hard drive can be set up to record everything, or nighttime only, or certain times of day only. However you want to set it up. Obviously not recording everything makes the space on your hard drive go farther. In general terms, it looks like a very nice system with 6-8 cameras costs about $1000. Then his installation is $150 per camera. Of course it sounds like installing it yourself would not be that hard. But I appreciated his advice as he has installed many of these systems.
Just FYI. Sorry that happened.

Be sure to put the hard drive in a secure location.

I have a feeling the Jeep is going to be totalled...
I called state farm today cause I haven't heard back from them and the first guy said we'll send someone out to put new tires on so you can get it to the shop for inspection.
Then a lady got on the phone and said that doesn't sound like a good idea so we'll send someone out to look at it
So it doesn't sound good a 17 year old Jeep with 126k on it...

Its still a ~$10k jeep so there is a significant claim cost before they will total it, all depends on the estimate and whatever threshold state farm uses. Typically it is current damaged value + repair cost must be less than repaired value. Not all companies use the same metric but most follow this general formula with company specific caveats. Since your Jeep is no-longer stock you can usually support a value higher than KBB book by collecting a number of craigslist adds for similarly built jeeps. If they do total it, hopefully you get a low buyback price so you can get it fixed (and upgraded).

Mike, review the thread that Kris wrote about auto insurance. Don't take what they offer you. You have upgrades invested in it. How much is a new set of tires? The rest is just aesthetic/superficial in nature. Maybe you can get enough to cover your tires and get some extra for upgrades. Then just give it a nice rattle can paint job.
