Virus and Firewall Protection for Linux?

So since i'm kind of a newbee using linux as an operating system i have this question in regards to virus protection. Is there something that is recommended for linux? from what i can read some people say yes while others are confident that linux is somewhat immune to viruses. Also since it has its own firewall protection, there is no need for those programs that help auto configure firewall settings such as macafee or noton security suite. I think i already know my answer to this question but was just curious on your guys/gals opinions.
Thanks.

I haven't used any antivirus software on my linux servers. Maybe I should, but I haven't. If you want to try one, I would try Avast - http://www.avast.com/ . Its free for personal use and what I use on my Windows machines.

Redhat, Fedora, and other Redhat derivatives should all come with a built in firewall, iptables. I don't use it either. embarassed At the office most application software requires that it be turned off and we're behind a corporate network based firewall. At home I rely on my router's firewall.

You can check your computer's vulnerability with ShieldsUp! from Gibson Research - https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

Maybe we do need the Nerdatorium Forum. lol

I've never used antivirus on my lunix systems.

if you install the OS and any shared software as root, and do all your "stuff" as a user in a different UID group and keep an eye on /var and /usr permissions, keep password and group files set with proper permissions, then its pretty hard for one to download a virus and allow it to do anything.

that and your browser won't have any activeX junk running.

Closed Mondays.
