Wild Blue Internet

Anyone have (or know someone that has) the computer dealy that you use to align a Wild Blue Satellite? Wild Blue is internet and based on what I've read it's far more complicated and far more expensive to align than the TV satellites. They've been out twice in the last three months to realign the stupid thing and this time they charged me $50! Plus, I haven't had reliable home internet since the last time it snowed. 😯 I'd really like to do it myself or find a friend I can pay something more reasonable or at least get better service.

its not something you can do with your tv? i think dish has a setup menu that you can use lock on to the satellite position.
my azimuth is 153 elevation 44 and skew is 82

you need R2D2.

Maybe you need a roof over the dish to keep the snow, wind and birds off of it.

No, it's the internet so it's not connected to the TV. Based on what I have read on the internet it's way more precise than a TV because you have to be able to send and receive. One article compared it to aiming at a point the size of your thumb 22,000 miles above the equator. The tools I can find are on the order of $700.

I'd just have to lift R2 onto the roof and that sounds miserable. 😀 I thought about trying to protect it, but with my luck I'd damage it while building and it'd get real expensive.

My contract is over this summer and I've heard about a local provider that offers a similar service with a tower based on the top of a local mountain. I couldn't reach it when we moved it, but they were going to relocate it so I might get lucky.

We switched from Dish Network & ATT dsl to Uverse a little over a year ago. I'm on the fence about which TV service I liked better, but the internet on Uverse is dramatically better. I had the 3 meg dsl package but speed tests were pretty consistently between 1.5 and 2 meg. With Uverse we got the 3 meg package and its consistently 2.7 to 2.8 meg.

I did find the 2wire residential gateway they provide was a little weak for wireless networking. I was frequently getting dropped signals even though my laptop was only 4 feet from the rg. I ended up attaching my old wireless router to the rg as a wireless access point and everything works well now.

After seeing your original post I thought "how hard could it be?" I know that many people use satellite internet in their rv's and have to reaim the dish regularly. After googling a bit I found that Wild Blue is the most difficult to align and like you found, the tools cost several hundred dollars.

I did find a couple references to using less expensive satellite aiming tools, but apparently the voltage or signal strength of WB is much higher than other satellites and ends up burning up those tools.

Someday maybe they will have fiber optic in my neighborhood...or maybe cable...or maybe a phone... 😀 My guess is that I'm stuck with Wild Blue for quite a while. I think I'm going to start searching Ebay to see if I can find a cheaper tool. Even a couple of hundred bucks would pay for itself in a few years.
