The comment period for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Public Motorized Travel Management (DEIS) on the Plumas National Forest has been extended for an additional 30 days. “I am gratified so many people are involved in reviewing this document and pleased to extend the comment period as a result,” noted Forest Supervisor Alice Carlton.
A Notice of Availability for the DEIS was published in the Federal Register on December 29, 2008; the opportunity to provide comments to establish eligibility to appeal under 36 CFR 215 now ends 75 days following that date.

The DEIS, associated maps and instructions for commenting can be found on the forest website at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/plumas.

This project is part of a Nation-wide process to authorize motorized vehicle use on those existing trails, roads and areas, which would provide for a variety of recreational experiences in a safe and ecologically sustainable manner. The authorized use would also include the current restriction on travel between trails, roads, and areas (cross-country) unless some type of permit is in place that allows otherwise.

A final environmental impact statement and decision on this project are expected later in the year.

The following Plumas National Forest Recreation personnel are available for questions:
· Peggy Gustafson, Mt. Hough RD, Quincy, (530) 283-0555
· Deb Schoenberg, Feather River RD, Oroville, (530) 532-7460
· Judy Schaber, Beckwourth RD, Blairsden, (530) 836-2575
· Pete Hochrein or Jane Beaulieu, Supervisor’s Office, Quincy, (530) 283-2050
