Some of you remember my friend Eric from a few years back. His dad has opened a new shop in Cameron Park. It's called U-Do-It Auto Repair. From his website:
We have been in the automotive repair business as shop owners, managers, and technicians for over 35 years. As we have have progressed in business we saw a need for a different type of automotive repair facility to be available for those persons who want to work on their own vehicle but do not have the place or equipment to do so.
Our solution was to create a new type of shop where anyone can rent the space and do the work they desire on their own vehicle.
With our knowledge and the tools available even someone who is just learning how to maintain their vehicle will find a safe and enjoyable place to start their work.
If you need help, we would love to help show and teach you how to properly maintain and work on your vehicle.
Come by and check us out, or make an appointment today.
He has a couple of lifts and all the tools you need to do the job right. You just do the work with as little or as much of his help as you need. They have access to all the Mitchell Manuals plus John's know-how. His "rent-a-mechanic" rate is awesome if you want to try something but don't have the guts. Now you can do everything from oil changes to complete rebuilds on your own.

I've seen these for some time in other parts of the country. They typically run into a liability issues. I assume there is a waiver you must sign, that says 1) if I kill myself working a tool I don't know how to use thier not liable and 2) if i kill myself driving home after I put on my new rear axle that I didn't know how to do that they are not liable. The other issue i've heard of with these types of service is the nickle and diming of prices. $80 buck for 5 hours seems like a pretty good deal. But if you get hit for $20 in cleaning charges and $50 in labor for lowering the car 5 times during that 5 hour window your cost starts going up. Its also a limited market. You are targeting DIY people who are usually some of the cheapest SOBs out there. We want to do it ourselves and save some money. If It takes me 5 hrs and my bill is 200, what is the difference in taking it to someone who knows what they are doing will warranty the work and will get the job done in 2hrs at $100 an hour. Just a thought... I probably sound like debbie downer... not trying to.
I wish them the best, I may even swing by to use them sometime to. Good to know there is one in the area.

Huck I think you're 100% right about the liability stuff. He ran a business for years so I'm sure he's had a lawyer go through all his stuff. In this case I wouldn't worry about the nickel and diming. Look at Extreme Gear for that type of stuff. It probably doesn't mean a whole lot since I don't know you all that well, but I'll vouch for John. He's a good guy, understands repeat business, and a 4wheeler. He'll take care of you. Just be prepared for his sense of humor and if he doesn't like you, you'll know it. 😀
Personally, for basic maintenance I'd rather do it myself even if it costs me the same. Too many mechanics out there are little more than trained monkeys. I trust my work far more than theirs. I'll never let a place like Les Schwab touch my brakes ever again.
