I know this is memorial weekend so many people will have things going on.
The plan here is to explore behind 42 milestone tract, to our trail, and the western slope of packsaddlepass Rd, potentially getting all the way over to either Kyburz, Sand Flat, or even MET!
If you have room, you can bring a saw, gloves or limbing tools. I expect we will hit AT LEAST 1 downed tree on the road.
This is a casual day run, but there are some requirements below.
Meeting at Fresh Pond Chevron, 830 AM. We will plan to leave by 9AM.
Please try to spend a few bucks at the market/gas station to support local business.
We will plan to stop for lunch somewhere in the snow and relax to enjoy the end of winter - again!
Requirements are simple!
Have an air system of some type to air down and up.
Have both front and rear recovery points.
Have at least 1 locker, two is even better.
Have 1 strap with you, and hopefully a D-ring.
Have a CB radio - handheld is acceptable as well. You can buy handhelds on amazon for 50-100 bucks and get them within a couple days.
Do post up if you plan to attend so we know to look for you! There is no need to post that you cannot make it - I expect people to have plans!

Brad: you said CB radio? I thought you guys were talking on the club frequency last weekend. My ham radio is screwed up, I have to get Tyler to look at it. But if we are going to use CBs, I'll go ahead and buy a cheap handheld.
That's what I did. They run 50-100. I paid 100, but got a car charging cable, extended range magnetic antenna. It takes 9AA batteries. I ordered NiMH batteries so the provided charger will manage them. It was like 120 total.
Yes, this trip will be a CB focus in the hope everyone can have a radio. Each vehicle having a radio makes stuck/driving/recovery discussions much easier.

I might be able to help buck, PM me the model and the issue you are having. Worst case I can take a look at the next meeting.

For anyone who didn't see the Facebook post, we had big fun. I hadn't been up on the strawberry trail in way too long. It was absolutely amazing in 2 ways, one good/bad and one bad: good/bad is the shocking amounts of snowmelt water. It was like driving up a stream at points. There are some cuts through the trail, some pretty major, for streams and sort of waterfalls. Beautiful, tons of water, so much for the drought, but the trail is wrecked because of it.
Bad because of the thousands of scorched and dead trees. Extremely, extremely sad and just devastation. It's a little bit like a massive cemetery in that way.
Yuuuuge thanks to Brad/Kathleen (sorry, "Be-rad"),Garrett, and Lynda/Guy for not only coaching me through several massive snowbanks, but also for being extremely patient and kind to my rug rats. Great day!
EDIT: I forgot to add that Lynda gathered pinecones from higher elevation and tossed them out at lower elevation, where all the trees are burned/dead.
So Lynda may be wrong about chili, but she is our wise, living proverb:
"The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit."

Buck is right about all the water, especially in the trail doing damage that will be beyond our control & repair. It will continue to run from snow in the higher elevations for a long time & could render the trail impassable in a short time. The repairs can be overwhelming. A reassessment report to the Forest Service must be held until later so all the repairs can be assessed.

Ha! I'm gunna plant a bunch of beans out there too!!
It was an amazing day. The weather was perfect. Not cold, not hot; beautiful skies. The waterfalls were breathtaking.
I'll post some pics I took as well. It's funny, we were worried about making the trail "tougher", but Mother Nature has done a fantastic job. In fact, we need to help reign her in so she doesn't make it impassable soon. Ha.
Buck is right. It was fun chunking pine cones in the scratched areas. His children are an absolute blast! They are game for just about anything! They helped gather the cones and wanted to do more, but I was limited and forgot to bring bags to collect them.
I have this vision that in the future you will be able to see our amazing trail regrowth as an oasis in the burn scar; it "somehow" recovered more quickly than the surrounding areas... tee hee hee
The kiosk looked great! Couldn't tell it has even seen winter weather at all.
Thanks, Brad for putting this on. It was fun!
See ya'll out there soon!
