Saturday July 29th 2023 - Bear Valley Loop OHV Run
This run will be our pre-run for the club's hosting of the Sierra Trek Saturday Outer Limits Run. That run is described as a stock 4x4 rigs run, so we will keep this pre-run stockish rig friendly. Club's minimum vehicle requirements and a positive, friendly attitude required. We will use the club's PosseV2 HAM frequency for communications, so bring your HAM radios.
Meet at 8:30am at the Shell gas station in Truckee (address is 10278 CA-89, Truckee, CA 96161).
Depart for trail about 8:45am; we will air down when we turn onto Cottonwood Rd (at 39.506068, -120.282084).
Goal is to start heading up Cottonwood Rd. by 9:30am and spend the day scouting the trail system with a lunch somewhere in there. We will plan to be off the trail and airing up around 3:30pm ish.
A day on the trail is priceless!

I will see about printing out some large trail numbers (the 1-34 on the paper maps we got) and getting them laminated at the office. Will help with trail navigation and helping people see where they are much easier. Should be easy enough to staple to a tree and should last till the event.
We should also use flagging to mark the intersections again since it is easy for someone to take a wrong turn when the group at Sierra Trek gets spread out.

This would be great, Kris. Thanks. Remind me, which map has those numbers you are referencing? Im wondering if I can download to my Gaia GPS... Thanks

I will try to be there for this one. I may camp in the Bear Valley area that full weekend so can I just meet you at the trailhead?
Yes.
There is a very small possibility I might camp there too the night before... but if not, we can meet up at the Cottonwood Rd turnoff (at 39.506068, -120.282084) about 9:15am when everyone airs down for the day. We can connect via the club's PosseV2 HAM frequency too.

Been a while since I created the post. Want to see who from the maybes can confirm for this pre-run. Confirmed I think it’s me, Jeff, John so far. If you can make this, please confirm if you haven’t. Jeff and I would like to make sure we get a good plan together for 2 subgroups for the actual Sierra Trek run. Thanks

What kind of rig is needed for this? Since I am starting the 1 ton conversion, the Jeep with be on the rack for a bit.I have a 2nd Gen Dodge on 33's or a stock Tacoma TRD Offroad or... a Ford Escape AWD
Sierra Trek says a stock high clearance 4X4 can do it. We had a few stock vehicles last year, including a stock Tacoma. They did have some minor clearance issues but some of that they could have bypassed. The trail was overgrown in a few places last year and may cause some brush marks.
Here is the run description: Experience the High Sierra on this guided run through the Gold Country. There is one loop that for completely stock 4x4s as well as an intermediate loop designed for slightly modified 4x4s.

This run is a little over a week away. I would like to get a confirmation for who will be participating on this run because we have several tentative replies. Last year I did a pre-run for the pre-run and my friend and I did a lot of trail maintenance, including a lot of brush trimming and trail debris removal. I'm concerned that there may be a lot of erosion damage and significant vegetation growth that could require mitigation. For those attending, please bring loppers, shovels, handsaws and any other tools that may prove beneficial.
Thanks,
Jeff

We were one of the tentative attending early on & now will not be able to make this run. Have fun & be sure to report everyone going is safely home afterwards.
