OfflineI am going out to check out the Calaveras Dome this Saturday, June 7th. I have never seen the Dome before. There is a trail that starts off Hwy 88 and exits on Hwy 4. I have never been on this trail so a bit of exploring. It is an overland trail of 42 miles rated 2/10, 5 hours of driving time if one does the entire trail. Scenic rating is 9/10. The trail description notes the requirement of a high clearance vehicle, some of the trail can be done in a passenger car, so a very easy trail. The goal is to see the Dome. If anyone is interested, please post. We would meet at the Amador Gas and Grocery in Pioneer, 27846 Inspiration Dr. E in Pioneer off Hwy 88 at 8:00. Depart for the trail around 8:30.

OfflineWe went, we enjoyed, we completed what we set out to do & will return again to visit things we didn't have the time to see. this area, the campgrounds, the dam, the streams, the bridges, the granite dome, the entire experience of the day was new to us & was a reminder how great the Sierras can be no matter where you travel - new or not. We traveled in this vast area dominated mostly by PG&E & enjoyed every minute of it. Had a shaded lunch on the Salt Springs dam, visited a nearby campground, which was nested in ponderosa & redwood trees & followed a canal carrying water throughout the dense forest. Surely a place to visit & enjoy. We will return as soon as Jeff Light organizes another run in this beautiful place.
Most of the roads were either paved or graveled, with some washed out to single lanes, but for the most part, easily negotiable. Got home in the later afternoon & no worse for wear. Thanks, Jeff, for this look into a totally surprising place & an enjoyable day.

OfflineWe had a very picturesque trail run through a heavily forested part of the Sierras on the way to the dam and Calaveras Dome as Lynda and Guy posted. We entered the trail system from Hwy 88. Trail was super easy, didn't need 4WD and no need to air down. Beautiful campgrounds by the Mokelumne River. I will post again to run the rest of trail entering from the Hwy 4 side.
