OfflineI am going to explore Scotts Lake and Crater Lake to the Alpine Mine in Hope Valley on July 5. Both these trails are listed in Roger Mitchell's book "High Sierra East Side" Both these trails are less than 10 miles in length, in and out, rated 2 - 3/6 on the Mitchell Scale which he describes requirements of high clearance, 4WD with low gears. He describes the Crater Lake trail as steep and sometimes rough class 3. In comparison, he lists Slickrock as 2 -5/6. Scotts Lake is listed in All Trails as moderate. I have not been on either of these trails but they can be seen on OnX maps and All Trials. The trailheads are very close together off Hwy 88 on the opposite side close to Red Lake.
If these trails do not pan out or if there is time, OnX maps shows the Burnside trail at the junction of Hwys 88 and 89, also in Hope Valley. This trial leads to Pickett Peak Road and Hawkins Peak Road. OnX rates them as 1- 4/10 scale. OnX trail reports that Pickett Peak is open, Hawkins Peak may have snow at the top.
If there is any interest, please post. We would meet at the Shell gas station off Hwy 50, Sly Park Exit, 6529 Pony Express Trail at 8:00 and head out at 8:30. We would pick up MET to 88 to Hope Valley. Would expect to be done by 2:00 or 3:00 depending on how many of these trail folks want to do.
Post if looking interested in getting out after 4th of July.

OfflineAnother notable run was accomplished this SAURDAY. We turned off Hwy 88 into the mountains surrounding Carson Pass & Hope Valley. The road was rough & narrow & got narrower on the way up. The road ended at Crater lake at about 8,600' altitude. Turns out this small lake was raised from a nearby mining operation back in the late 1800's (looking up 's history now). This is a great place to visit (& camp out) in fall when the colors change.
We attempted to visit the mining site, but the road was too badly damaged to get there & we abandoned the effort. There are other ways in, in which well try again some other time.
Overall, we had a great time, challenging roads thanks to Jeff Light for his incite on these types of runs...

OfflineIt was a wonderful day in Hope Valley. As Lynda mentioned, we made it up to Crater Lake. I was most impressed with beauty of the lake. Very calm with a waterfall in the cliffs surrounding the Lake in the background. This would be would be a great place to disperse camp, we saw several vacant spots by the lake....only three other vehicles at the Lake. The views of Hope Valley were awesome from high up on the trail.
The Alhambra and Alpine mines were elusive to find although we saw tailings and other evidence of mining operations.
No damage to report. The only incident was mine. I was in my Red Jeep which has a pop up tent on top. On the way to the Alpine mine I could not navigate a very narrow part of the trail due to trees leaning over the trail that my tent could not fit under. I had to back up on the trail a few hundred yards and do like a 20 point turn around but did not fall off the steep edge of the trail and die due to Lynda's excellent spotting.
Will definitely be going back in Fall to see the colors and check out Scott's Lake and the other trails.
