I am going camping and wheeling July 25 – July 27. I am heading to Gold Lake up past Sierra City. If you have never been there is a great place to camp, Lake front on Gold Lake. Most 4wds can get to the camp site, one year I saw a Lexus SUV back in there. There are five trails in the area to wheel. We will do some or all of them. In order of difficulty.
Deer Lake – Short trail that connects the Sierra Butte Trail and Gold Lake Trail, Deer Lake is a nice small lake with decent fishing.
Sierra Butte – Pretty easy trail with only one real difficult section climbing toward the fire look out. There is a nice hike to the tip top of the mountain and the fire look out. The fire look out actually is on metal stilts over rocks. Great views, a bit windy up there.
Gold lake Trail – More difficult that the previous and goes around the Gold Lake area.
Snake Lake – The hardest trail in the area. Nice ledges and a couple of good rock climbs. Its a short trail, take about 2 hours to do the loop and return to camp.
Poker Flats – This trial is near us but closer to Downeville. It drops down the canyon and climbs back up the other side. Climbing out is steep and has some loose gravel/sand.
Waterfall – Close to the camp site there is a waterfall that you can hike to see. Its not a raging waterfall like Niagra but its a nice little fall.
The plan would be to camp both nights at Gold Lake and do trail runs and return to camp each day. The trails are close enough and short enough that people can go do the trail and return within a few hours. Those that want to hang and fish have that option as well. We can do a pot luck for Saturday night if enough people are coming.
So who is interested? I will also be posting this up on the High Sierra 4×4 forum as well.

Would my stock Dodge Durango pulling a flat bed (Suzuki on top) be able to get in to the camp ground?
If I can't build it, then it's something that should be bought.

Its possible. It would at least be able to get to the trail head at Gold Lake. Worse case the trailer would need to be parked there and then the Durango and Zuki could go from there to the camp site about 1/4 mile away. If I was pulling a trailer, I would pull it with the Zuki off for the last quarter mile. We hauled the jumping jack into the campsite last year, but the axle is a torsion style and is only about 8ft long. (picture) It made it without any issue. The map picture shows how far you have to drive from pavement to the campsites (blue stars).

I just got my Zuki back running (transmission replacement) last night, we’re going to have a “family meeting” this evening to decide if we will be going this weekend. Let you know ASAP. I’m hoping we will…..
Well…. Not going to be able to go.
