Hey all, as of now, there are only 3 rigs RSVPd for my Niagara Rim trip. Myself and 2 Madhatters. I may get a few more as we get a little closer, but I would love to see more people out there and hang out with more people for the weekend.

Minimum requirements are 33s and 1 locker, or 35s and limited slips with a winch.

The "Plan!"

We will be staying at "Niagara Creek Campground" (link at the bottom). Please note... there are 2 campground at the Niagara Rim OHV Trail area, the Niagara Creek CG and the OHV Campground. We will be staying at NIAGARA CREEK. I know last year there was some confusion about this when some came up the morning of the run. Niagara Creek is the closest campground to highway 108... Once you get off 108 on Eagle Meadow Rd (5N01), skip your first left (very short dead end path), and take the 2nd left (06N24) and follow that maybe 1/4mile. The campground is on the left hand side near the end of the path. Campsites are 8$ per night, per site. There are 10 sites. Vault toilets. No potable water. Fire rings and tables at each site. I will get up there either early on Friday or late on Thursday and grab the bigger fire ring campsite at the end. As of now, fire permits are not required, but are "Strongly Encouraged". Get your fire permit here: http://www.preventwildfireca.o.....Campfires/

We will do the "main" run on Saturday, and we will be running the trail South to North. Plan to leave the campground at 830AM. This will ensure lots of time to play around at the rock pile and lion's butt, and hopefully end the day on top of Double dome rock for a gorgeous sunset... or dinner, then back to double dome for the sunset. It is about 3.5 - 4  hour ride home on Sunday for bay area peeps... so those that want to stay, we can play around sunday until 3-4pm. Then head on down the road and grab dinner in Sonora.

If anyone wants to come up Thursday evening/night... I would love nothing more than to go out and play most of the day on Friday as sort of a "bonus" day of wheeling. So, if anyone is interested, let me know and I will make that happen!!

Last place to gas up is Sierra Energy at

Communications:
Once on the trail, we will use Madhatters Simplex ham radio - 147.555mhz. I will bring a bunch of spare handhelds to let people listen on if you don't have your license yet. That way you know what's going on at all times.

Emergency Communications will be done on the Pinecrest Repeater (147.975 -.6mhz offset with pl of 100.0hz).

Unfortunately, there is a big hill between the Pinecrest repeater and the trail... the repeater comes in super clear right up until about 1000ft before you turn off at Eagle Meadow (5N01). So, if we have any medical emergencies, we will go out on to 108 and hit the Pinecrest Repeater to get help.

Trail Repeater Communications will be on the Bear Top repeater (441.0375 +5mhz offset, with a PL of 151.4hz) ... which is the Bear Valley Search and Rescue repeater used during ski season. It covers Niagara Rim area very well, but is much less monitored than the Pinecrest repeater during the summer. This repeater will be used if, for some reason, someone gets out of simplex range. I will be monitoring this the entire time I am up in the campground/trail areas.

Please RSVP so I know who to watch for coming up!! I will send out this email a few more times as we get closer to make sure I hear from everyone that is going 🙂

See everyone at the Niagara Creek Campground!!!

Any questions, comments, concerns? Lemme know!

Looks like unfortunately I'm out of this run as much as I want to go but we have the 25th planned for Shaina's scope and my poor little Jeep doesn't meet the requirements of minimum requirements are 33s and 1 locker, or 35s and limited slips with a winch.

Looks like all the fun runs will have to wait till I get this Suzuki built

Last call for Niagara Rim. Putting together the people and rigs list tonight. Most rigs are going up Friday at some time. I will probably be leaving Sac around 10am Friday.

It was a lot of fun. Such a great trail!

Did some geocaching on my way up. There are a TON of caches along hwy 108. Went and checked out a 4000+ year old tree on Friday in the area (Bennett Jupiter), then caught the sunset from an awesome viewpoint on double dome. We also had a great view of the fire along the ridge on the other side of 108 from us... crazy view once the sun got fully down.

Saturday we ran the trail and had lunch at Lions Butt (play on words from moab's Lions Back... plus there is a huge rock in the middle of the play area that looks like a lions butt lol). Spent 3 hours playing there, then took the shortcut off the trail and back to camp because one of our TJ Rubicons was having issues with its rear locker. It wouldnt disengage, so we had to go back to camp, crack open her rear diff and manually disengage the locker. We decided to clean out the diff while we had it open.

While we were in camp waiting to leave Saturday morning, a black JKU Rubicon rolled by and asked us a bunch of questions. He was on a brand new suspension, 37s with beadlocks, and had never been wheeling before. Him and his son just finished the suspension last week and they were looking for something to test it on. So they ended up tagging along with us and got to learn a bunch about wheeling... from lines, to gearing, to how and when to use lockers, and lots more. They had a great time. They were from Turlock and told them to look into clubs in their area and told them about the benefits of clubs. They sounded excited about everything. So cool to see new blood get that excited over wheeling and being in the outdoors.

Sunday we spent running around trying to find gear oil and a pump. Once we had the diff filled back up, we went back out to the tree (people that showed up Saturday didnt get to see it yet). Then we went out to the rock pile and played a bit there. Then packed up, had dinner in Sonora, and went home.

Great weekend. The trail is in awesome shape. And now i have full GPS coords and gpx tracks of the trail to add to my website (whenever i get around to creating the trail reviews section). Plus it was nice not being in the 110 degree weather in sac over the weekend.

Another eye opener that came out of the weekend... one of the ladies on the trip is on the board of directors for CORVA. So i got to chat with her about a bunch of stuff, which lead to me getting to call in and be a guest on their board meeting conference call. Holy hell... the amount of work that CORVA puts into litigations to keep trails open to the public for all outdoors enthusiasts is breathtaking. I also got to learn a lot about SB249... and that nightmare that has been unfolding (everyone keep your ears and eyes open, there should be a big announcement soon about it!!). It really is amazing the work that CORVA does and inspires me even more to do what i can to help organizations like CORVA and Cal4Wheel fight the good fight.

Hey sounds like you guys had a great time.  Your friend with the tj rubicon did he have the factory lockers? If so I hope he was able to get oil with the limited slip additive otherwise damage can occur.

Yup. That's what took so long on Sunday hunting down the right gear oil.
