Who’s interested in Sierra Trek? There has been some discussion about having the club staff Winch Hill 5 (WH5) at this year’s Sierra Trek, August 6-9th. Sierra Trek is a four day event put on by the California Four Wheel Drive Association. It is an important fundraiser for CAL 4 Wheel. Last year John MacDonnell, Tyler and I worked WH5 and we had a great time.
If we want to consider staffing WF5 this year then the logical place to start is to see how many people might be interested in volunteering to do some spotting. If there is enough interest as a club, then the next step would be to contact CAL 4 Wheel and get our club formally approved to staff WH5. If the club does get approved to staff WH5, it is very important that we get enough volunteers to attend the event. If we don’t get enough people to attend, then we would be placing an unfair burden on those who do attend. I will make every effort to be there but I may not be able to commit until we get much closer to the event due to business obligations.
Sierra Trek takes place at Meadow Lake and the runs are mostly on the Fordyce trail. Volunteers pay a reduced registration fee of approximately $100 which covers meals and enables you to participate in one organized run. The regular, full registration is $185 per person. Most people camp at Meadow Lake. You can easily get to Meadow Lake and to WH5 in a stock 2WD vehicle with moderate ground clearance, like a Subaru.
Although the event runs from Thursday August 6th to Sunday the 9th, you can volunteer and attend all or part of the event. Ideally we would have enough people so we could have assigned shifts. If you just want to come up and volunteer for the day I’m guessing you don’t even need to register for the event. Some clubs camp as a group, which makes for some great social time for their members. If you want to camp farther away from the crowds you are welcome to do that as well (however it is beneficial to be close to the toilets). A number of people or groups get up there on Wednesday or even sooner and secure a good group camping spot for others in their group and so they are ready to go on Thursday morning when the event officially starts. At night there is live music or a DJ, dancing, a raffle, full bar and other activities around a large bonfire.
If you think you might be able to attend please reply to this thread so we can get a better idea of how many people might be able to make it. Once we get it formally approved, mark your calendar and try to schedule the time off of work, if necessary. I think this would be a fun event for our club. Here are some links to Sierra Trek for additional information (their website has more links about Sierra Trek but you have work to find them as it isn't laid out all that clearly):

It'd be great to have the club staff WH5 - count me in. I plan on attending Sierra Trek again this year and will volunteer at least one day, maybe two. If we can get a camp site reserved/established so I could drive up Wed. night after work, then I could volunteer Thurs. and either Fri. or Sat. depending on needs. Looking forward to it.
