George, you were planning to catch up on Friday right? Larry and I were talking about running Deer Valley Friday and camping near the Slick Rock trailhead at a campground over there. On Saturday we'd run Slick Rock and camp in the same spot. Saves a bit of setting up, and we can have a campfire.

I'm planning on either meeting you Friday AM and run Deer Valley with you, or meeting you Saturday morning near the Slick Rock trailhead and camping through Sunday.

I'm hoping Mark chimes in and lets us know if he can adjust to the plans. He was pretty excited at the meeting.

We're planning to meet at the Safeway in Pollock Pines at 10:00 on Friday and the Slick Rock trailhead at 10 on Saturday. If the times don't work, let me know and we'll see what we can figure out.

We're starting at Lake Alpine.

Slick Rock Road is located in the beautiful area below Lake Alpine. How to get there. Take HWY 4 to Lake Alpine enter the lower campground at W. Lake Alpine rd. stay to your right and follow a gravel road, both sides will be posted private property. You will go about ¾ of mile and you will come the sign for the start of Slick Rock Road.

I also need to revise the meeting time on Friday. We hope to leave the Safeway around 10. Not 9.

I won't know if I'm meeting up with you on Friday or Saturday until probably tomorrow.

10am at the Pollock Pines Safeway sounds great! Then I could sleep in until 9:50am. . . .

It's an old Jedi mind trick. If you ask him, he'll think it was his idea. lol

Mark called me tonight, he can't run on Friday and is concerned about how his FJ will do on Slick Rock with a 3 inch lift and 32's.

He said he'd call me Friday and let me know if he'll be meeting us at the campsight Saturday morning or not before we head out.

Since I've never been there I can't advise him either way. Has he seen this? http://www.californiajeeper.co.....review.htm

If he wants to run it, we'll get him through. I don't think any of us are in a hurry and there will be plenty of eyes to help spot him.

Oh yeah...tell him to quit calling and check the board! 😀 lol 😛

One more thought...he does meet the minimum vehicle requirements right? Especially tow points. I have a spare strap and a few other things I can loan him if he's short, but tow points are a must.

From the bylaws.

a. Be in good working condition. Vehicles with known mechanical problems are discouraged from attending runs.
b. Have current vehicle registration and be street legal or current “Green Stickerâ€

I've never seen his rig, I have no idea how he's set up. All he said was that he had a 3" lift and 32" tires. I still haven;t seen him post so I'm not sure he's following the thread.

Here's another good link:

I think the staircase is the only thing that looks intimidating. I told him on the phone that we would take our time and help him through the obstacles but it was ultimately up to him. I kinda got the impression he was going to bow out for this run.

He could easily cut his teeth on the 8/2 run.

cool site. i especially like the write up on strawberry.

"Painted Rock - While this obstacle is still the most difficulty on the trail, it is not
the same nail biter that earned it's name. In the past a flat rock in the middle of
the trail forced your rear driver quarter panel into "Painted Rock". The rocks have
been shifted making passage less of a concern"

Personally, I think pulling on the front tie down point is a really bad idea. I really doubt it was designed for that kind of force. Plus, a lot of them seem to be tucked up underneath the vehicle meaning a strap would drag across a bumper.

How bad can using a tie down be? lol Don't they come accross the ocean using them? Bumper are just cosmetic anyways...

My 4-runners each had one hook up front. I hope his is the same.

Just finished my first cup of coffee, loading the ice chests now.

Are we setting up camp at Slick Rock tonight, then leaving camp setup and returning to it Saturday night?
