Work parties don't count as member bbqs guys!
Nice try though!
The By-Laws do not say Work parties don't count as member BBQ.
This is what they do say: "Official Member status is obtained by hosting a BBQ and paying their dues obligation, after reaching PM status. BBQ hosting can be managed from several different approaches and PMs are encouraged to ask Official Members regarding suggestions in this area."
Brad, could you please clarify?

I didn't know if there was an unwritten rule regarding this, that's why I asked for clarification. Those of us who have not been in the club very long don't know what has normally been done. We only have the bylaws and the experiences of more senior members. What do the other seasoned members say?

Work parties have never counted for membership BBQs (in the past) because it's ALREADY the car owners responsibility to feed the people helping to build his rig.
However, I am not an officer and not in charge of such things.
Just thought I'd pass along what the past (unwritten) protocols have been.
I used to wheel a lot. . .

Well I guess my question would be what was the intent of the requirements and bbq? Is it to show the a pending member has the dedication and real desire to become a member? Or for already members to get a free meal out of it. For me helping Mike or any other members that I can and choose to doesn't ever come with getting something in return for it. I do it because we are a united group and one of us is in need of help.

While I have already stated there is no by law language prohibiting the double (well actually, triple credit of this approach) counting for membership, I can respond to the member bbq piece.
The member bbq is another opportunity for the club to be social. It affords people the chance to get together for a positive reason. In the past, member bbqs had to be proposed on the forum and accepted by enough attendees to qualify for an event. Usually we had solid turn outs. In this case no one knew it was a member bbq in addition to a work party in addition to a credited qualifying event.
member bbqs are most often pot-luck type meals that everyone brings something to, so I've never seen it as a "free meal".
Buying food for others during a work party on my rig is ALWAYS a given. If you come over to help me you can expect to be treated to food. I have always done this because it's a sign of respect for the time others have given up to help me. This includes time away from family, time away from work, and often time away from working on their own rig. I have free beer too! If others don't feel the same way, I'm ok with it, but I don't plan to stop thanking others for taking the time to help me.

I guess the words always and responsibility are what I'm not comfortable with. I have been helped in my life from people I call my friends because I was in need. I help those I can to in need for the same reason. I do understand what you are saying as for thanking and showing appreciation for someone helping someone out. But for me the feeling I get helping anyone or anything out in a time of need is all I'm after. So I'll leave it at that.

So I want to just take it off the table about the work party bbq counting as my membership bbq...
I'm one of the new guys around here and I don't know how it works. I was just throwing it out there in hopes of soon being a member.
I did post on the forum that I was going to feed everybody, and asked if nobody opposed it, if it would count as my member bbq...nobody ever said anything about it besides Rich. I asked if anyone had any specific orders for food or drinks, I made sure to ask Rich what kind of beer he would want since it was his place.
I didn't mean to stir up any conflict and I apologize if I did so...I look forward to hopefully being a part of a great group of people.
I will do a bbq soon and hope everyone is able to come.

Thanks Mike for the understanding and rescheduling your member BBQ for another time. I was not trying to stir up controversy either. I am a relatively recent member and was unaware of the normal procedures other than what is in the by-laws. The Club's normal unwritten procedures should be adhered to. Since Mike had asked on the forum if the work party would count as his BBQ and got no objections prior to the event, I assumed (my mistake) that it was ok. I know there are good reasons behind all Club procedures.
Brad, maybe we can make it an agenda for the next meeting to go over some of the unwritten normal procedures such as this so the newer members are on the same page as the more senior members. This may help avoid some misunderstandings in the future.

You raise a good point. The bylaws have been reviewed about 3 times during the existence of the club. Any member is eligible to propose modification that aid clarity or reflect changes. This would help memorialize closing some gaps

So do we have a new member here or what???
Lordie Mercy Me. I sure didn't mean to open this can of worms but since I did I'm glad we got some big fish from fishing with them. LOL ! I agree with what everyone says (because you know my opinion is just so very important.). Love what Dustpan said and that Brad reiterated it with the character of the members in our club. That's so true, we do help where and when we can and that quality keeps us a great unit. Rich your always positive about stuff and Mike you get brownie points for being the topic of discussion and taking it well.
