Bender's New Truck

Hey Bender,

I know you've got a 2005 and not sure you have a response to this, but asking on behalf of a friend that has the 2011 Pro4X (v6, but idk the tranny or other features) version with regards to towing. Now, I rarely tow but I have some concern for my friend.

It looks like the towing capacity is about 6300 lbs. and they are looking to tow a travel trailer that is 5700 lbs (unloaded). Plan is to live out of it, which I see easily exceeding the truck's tow capacity. I'm not sure what their expectation is and I've just been offering cautionary notes b/c it seems there is little margin here, brake control issue, frequency of towing, etc.

Any general knowledge on this from your end with your experience thus far? Anyone else got some helpful thoughts?

Thanks for anything offered.

That's too much trailer for that truck. By the time they load their belongings, food & water in it they'll be way overweight.

x3. The truck does great with smaller trailers but there's no way I'd use it to tow something that big.

Do they make a 38x14.50 duratrac yet?

they make my truck's size and I'm not happy with my current tire's wear rate so I'll swap over to them with my next set!

I don't think I'd put them on something like your Jeep. They're aggressive but there really isn't a lot of sidewall (2 ply) to take the abuse of the rocks.

They couldn't get the DuraTracs in the size I wanted and they were several weeks out. So, I went with the Kelly tires which are basically a copy of the DuraTracs but much cheaper. They seemed to have good reviews accross the internet, so I thought I'd give them a try. First impressions are good. They are quiet and they look great. We will see how they wear over time.

Cooper is the other significant US tire brand. Michelin is a French company, as is BFG, who is owned by Michelin.

Toyo owns Nitto, and both are Japanese.

WooHoo...I got a letter from Nissan today that says they're going to extend their extended-extended warranty to cover my radiator. They're also going to cover repairs that were made before the extension so I should be covered. That's about $550 back into my pocket!!!

Wow! What has been happening to that truck? Was there a radiator problem?

When Nissan upsized the engine in the truck they upsized the radiator and had the genius idea to make the transmission cooler and engine cooler one unit. Sounds like it went on from 2005-2010. They used some cheap parts and the wall that separates the transmission cooler from the engine cooler breaks then the two fluids mix. The mix results in a blown transmission and a gooped up engine. The crummy part is that they won't replace the transmission (something like $2,000) unless you have less than 60k miles in which case it's covered by the drivetrain warranty. I replaced my radiator as a preventative thing so it may be dicey but I'm hopeful. It sounds like it's almost a foregone conclusion that they will fail but Nissan refuses to issue a recall. They also told me to expect information on the class action lawsuit that has been filed. 👿

Nevermind...after reading all the details on the website it looks like I missed it by about 6,000 miles without a $2,000 copay. 🙁 Easy come easy go.

Now that Bill has his Jeep fixed 😀 I can piss and moan about mine 😥 ... My check engine light came on during my drive home AGAIN. I'm starting to hate this thing. I have no idea what's wrong but it's turning into a money pit. The last check engine light cost me about $400 (did all my own work) I have no idea what's wrong now. My gas mileage has gone down and it sounds "funny". Something like an exhaust leak.

Smoke check it... there is a you tube vid of a guy that hollowed out a gas cap and used it to check for evap leak. No reason why you couldnt push smoke up you tail pipe... haha sounds funny but plausible. That would show exhaust leak and where it comes from.

What code is your truck throwing? That should give you a hint.

Bty, I'm done bitching and moaning.
That is all.

Not sure yet. I don't have a reader so I'll have it checked tomorrow.

Bummer. I hate cars. All vehicles are money pits. I've had my truck for 9 months and the ac has gone out and I've had two tranny issues.

Um...what?

Keane,

Your truck is OBD2 from a google search. If you have Android phone, then I can recommend the best and cheapest code reader. One that you'll own. Total cost $40.

Bill knows what I'm talking about. Btw -- give it back Bill!!!
