If I get the tires I will mount them and leave for Loon. I've heard that people run these tires un-balanced. OR should I get them balanced? I would imagine that finding a shop to balance 38x 14.5 tires is difficult.

Why are they hard to balance? I've had mine done at 4-wheel parts and at Big O. My set didn't take much weight on three tires, but one did. I wouldn't be happy driving them unbalanced if the bad one was up front.

Why not send the wife to Reno for your tires? She could stop by Cabellas for you too while she was up there! :nutkick:

I like the way you think! However, I would be sleeping in the backyard for a month.

You'd have a great jeep to sleep in!

Skorch, thanks for the link.
Carl is saving the day! We are driving to Reno on Friday to get the tires. I just hope the tires show up when they say they will.

I have been very busy with work and the project. Currently I have the front axle about 98% done and the rear 75%. The Atlas is in thanks to Jeff and PJohn. Carl Dropped the rear drive shaft off at ADCO drive lines. Hopefully it will be done on Monday.

I want to again thank everyone who came over to help with the work party. I am still amazed the amount of work that was accomplished.

Yes I jumped ahead but I wanted to get something out. The lj is mostly done. 2 Rubicon trips and I'm getting the rig dialed in. I have more tech to post... in due time. Thanks for the patience.

Yes thats a big bad Dana 30 ! To get it to fit I had to stretch the control arms and shrink the track bar bolt hole. Way to much fun...

Have you ever wondered ho to shrink a hole? Well with the help of Ruffstuff I have figured out a solution. The track bat on the TJ was drilled out to 5/8" and the biggest bolt I could use was a 1/2". After searching the fix it washers from Ruffstuff make far superior connection.

I reused the RE track bar and the bolt was way to small for my liking. A call to RE and I found out that there is a 1/2 inch bolt hole replacement joint center for the small RE joints. Nt cheap but better than a whole new joint.

All you need to do is drill out the hole to 1/4 inch over the bolt size and weld these puppies in. Easy peasy.....

Thanks! Still have to get it dialed in. It drives great! Lots of fun and really fast. The auto, the 4:88s, and the 35's make it zippy.

My latest project. What a pita! This was harder than I expected. But worth it for Mason's third birthday.

I put together two of those for Christmas. I feel your pain. The boys love to ride them down the hill at our place and crash them into the fence. Maybe Brad will have some yard sale helmets. 😀

Great toy. I had one as a child. I rode it everywhere. Peddled it so much I wore holes in the front tire.

I had one as well and when we saw this one at costco we jumped at it. This puppy even has an e-brake! Unfortunately Masons legs are too short the reach the pedals.

Last week I finished up the TJ and decided to list it. I got a call right away. A guy from Stockton wanted to come up to look at it. The last smog was over 90 days old so I had to get the Jeep re-smogged. I figured since the Jeep was smogged in August and driven less than three hundred miles it would pass with no problems. Boy was I wrong. The jeep failed with a cylinder six misfire code.

At this point I started to panic. The buyer was going to be in town in three hours and I need a valid smog cert to sell it. So I tore into the motor to get it passed. Starting with the simplest and most likely causes of a misfire, I changed the spark plugs and the Coil pack. After resetting the code and driving fifty miles I returned to the smog station. They rechecked for codes, and sure enough, the cyl 6 misfire code had returned.

Since the spark was no longer the culprit I turned my attention to the fuel system. I checked and cleaned each injector. The OHM test had 11 in each. I switched injector six with injector 2, and then reinstalled them with new o rings. The hood was still up when the Buyer showed up. We tested the Jeep and he wanted it. We made an agreement based on it passing smog. I was upfront with the buyer and told him I would fix the problem the right way and give him a solid running Jeep.

The next day I drove it to Placerville and back to the Smog shop. The same code was thrown. Now I’m really up S-creek. No more smog shop until I figure out what is going on. Carl told me about a code reader app and he let me borrow his OBD2 reader adapter. This helped me out a lot. I realized this is a huge problem.

The next step is to check the compression. Off comes the coil pack, the spark plugs, and pulled the fuel relay. All the cylinders came back between 120 and 110, except cyl 6 which came back at 80 psi dry and 90 psi wet. At this point I am at the end of my rope and I have to go back to work. Off to the shop the Jeep goes.

The shop does a leak down test and finds the air blowing into the crank case. They recommend a complete valve job. The quote was approx $2k. No way was I going to pay this much. I called the buyer and explained the situation. He was understanding and didn’t want to back out of the sale. Thank God.
Yesterday I removed the head in about six hours. What a PITA! The head looks ok but piston six looks like it has a ton of carbon deposits. This morning I dropped the head off at the machine shop for a complete valve job. The machinist thinks that the valve job should fix the compression misfire problem. The valve job is going to cost around $200 and another $200 for gaskets.

I pray this head work fixes the problem. If it doesn’t I will have to completely rebuild the motor. I wonder how this passed smog in August and 300 miles later it won’t pass. Needless to say I’m not happy and financially this couldn’t come at worse time.

I’ll update what happens with the rebuild.
