Short story long...
We met at Nyack and were at the trailhead around 8am-ish. We aired down and I lead the way followed by Justin and then Brad. We were making good progress. I was able to cruise up driveline hill although it didn't seem as difficult as it used to be. We made it to the first river crossing fairly quickly and were looking at how low the water was. We were guesstimating it was 18" at most. It was deceptively deeper and was at least 24" deep. We continued on getting close to winch hill 1 when I was looking at a tree to my right and a rock jumped out on the left and grabbed my driver's side front tire whipping it hard and snapping my drag link TRE (my bad). There were enough threads left to get it back on and start limping back out. We made it back across the first river crossing and almost all the way up the difficult hill going up from the river when the remaining threads stripped out. No steering! With the help of Greg, Justin, and Brad, I converted over to man-power steering and was able to get to the top of the hill where a large group was waiting. At that point we sent Justin and his Dad out to Truckee for parts. The large group was only going to the first river crossing so they decided to just turn around where we were. We then decided to try and tow me out backwards to make steering easier. After making some progress Brad got in a tricky situation and ended up breaking his rear driveline. We then got my Jeep out of the way and I stayed with my Jeep all by myself fending off bears and mountain lions (it's true ). Brad and Greg continued on trying to get out in front wheel drive and at some point the front driveline broke. Greg then hiked out from there to call Jeff leaving Brad with his Jeep and fending off a nest of rattlesnakes (okay, one rattlesnake, but that one is true!). Greg called Jeff and Jeff was able to recruit Larry (former club member) to come out and help. By that point Justin was heading back with parts, dropped his Dad off back at Nyack (he tapped out), and was making his way back. Greg hiked backed in at met me back at my Jeep. Justin made his way back out to me and the three of us got my Jeep back together with the new TRE. We made our way back to Brad and strapped his Jeep to mine. We continued on and ran into Jeff and Larry on their way in. They turned around and we all made our way out off the trail. Brad called AAA while we aired up. We then got out to the 80 on ramp and waited there for the tow truck, and waited, and waited, ... The End.
I'll let the others fill in the gaps if I missed anything.

That blows Brad!! I would definitely be on the horn filing complaints everywhere and looking for a reimbursement.
It wasn't the day I pictured and Fordyce lives up to it's name. It is one tough cookie. We were making great progress then things changed very quickly. Everyone was a trooper especially Justin. He did tons of wheeling and chasing down the appropriate part and waiting with Brad. You sir are awesome!! Big thanks to Jeff and Larry for being available and willing to come out. Jeff brought a spare drive line and drag link for Kevin in case plan A didn't work. I walked a lot...and now my feet are sore. Next time I won't wear my comfy shoes.
I had a great time and it was awesome to see everyone come together and remind me why I am a part of a club like this. Many of you are high caliber people and I appreciate every single one of you and your willingness to stick together in the tough times.
Um...what?

First, I need to thank Justin for hanging with me until the wee hours of the night. His calls and complaints finally got a real tow company to show up at 130 am. After being lied to on 3 occasions and nothing showing up, I paid the big bucks to get home with my rig. AAA is going to get an earful, but they have the extensive phone log of my account. The final AAA offer was to pick me and jeep up with a truck from Truckee, then go back to Truckee. Then, another truck left shingle springs and delivered a tow to south Lake Tahoe. That truck would drive to Truckee and get me, then take me home. That plan would have got me hone at 430.
Then I'd like to thank Jeff, Larry and Huck who supported our challenges yesterday. Larry brought dinner. Jeff brought hucks parts.
I have the DLs out and am taking them in tomorrow. Let's see how bad this part is! I should be back in action next week.

You're welcome. Everyone has helped me so much and I wanted to return the favor. I was glad to help. I know the first half of Fordyce really well after doing it four times yesterday! It made me really mad getting gamed by Sierra Tow. Not to be confused with Sierra Hart Towing, which is a reputable shop out of West Sac. Anyway, I would like to find out officially if AAA will reimburse the member when using a non-AAA contractor and exactly what the rules are on that. In my case, when I lost my water pump, I was pretty sure that my towing coverage would only cover a certain amount regardless of who I used, so I just called the nearest tow company that I was familiar with which is Extreme Towing and got out of there. However, with AAA, one pays for the service and you expect a return on it, so I totally understand. Having that knowledge would be really helpful because you could choose not to wait for AAA and call a CHP rotation tow who has a contracted response time whereas AAA has none and no accountability either. Having said that, Brad and I were talking about whether one could purchase a towbar that could attach to a set of D-rings and we found that Smittybilt makes one. This could be taken on runs and used to tow a disabled rig. We would likely never have to go through what Brad went through again. Seems like a great idea for us to have something like that as a rigid bar is required for towing on the freeway. Then comes the matter of drag lights on the towed vehicle. That would probably be accomplished fairly easily with a standard 7 or 4 pin connector I guess. Anyway, what a day it was! I still would like to figure out what kind of snake we saw, though.

Seriously, it seems like ever interaction I have had with AAA is horrible. I don't pay for their services, but like Justin said, it seems my friends and family that do pay for their services end up paying more in other ways. Jeff and I were discussing on our way home that Jeff should have grabbed his trailer on the way up. It probably would have put him an hour or two behind the time he arrived but we could have got Brad home a lot earlier then he did. Hindsight is 20/20 though.
I would also like to say that Classic Tow http://www.classictow.net/ in Roseville is awesome and has always served me well and they use only flatbeds. Family owned and they will go the distance to serve you.
Um...what?

AAA has left me hanging twice. Once after my last Fordyce run in my YJ and once about 12 years ago. Basically the last 2 times I called them. And now after Brad's experience I will not be renewing my membership this fall. That's 3 strikes!
AAA wasn't the problem here. It was a tow company. I dealt with AAA today, they will cover the whole tow and give me a free additional year of membership. They were very nice and helpful. The tow company continually lied to AAA. What are they going to do???

Awesome! It's surprising they can't find a reliable towing company in that area. I would think they would get a lot of calls from around there.
