Sat. Feb 1 2024   8:30 am – 4:00 pm-ish

Meeting at the Subway/Shell station in Pollock Pines off of Hwy 50 and Sly Park exit.

(I was hoping to get a patrol sooner than this but there is only a few inches of snow at silverfork currently and no snow forecast for the next two saturdays, then another club has the last sat in Jan.)

Pollock Pines Subway/Shell Station
6529 Pony Express Trail
Pollock Pines
CA 95726

Meet at 8:30am for drivers' meeting and sign-in; we will leave at 9:00am.  Will plan on having lunch around noon or so and start packing up around 2:00pm - 3:00pm depending when the afternoon wheelers get back. Dress for a day in the snow and cold.

Please post below if you are attending.

Other notes:

Great BBQ opportunity if we have any prospects. We will use the club's HAM PosseV2 frequency for communications, so bring your HAM radios.  Additionally I will now carry a second radio for those with only GMRS/FRS radios.

General things to remember to bring:

-Tables

-Chairs

-Fire wood

-Warm Beverages

-Water (cold weather is very dehydrating)

-Easy-up

I am planning to be there. As I don't have experience with recovery (would like it if the club were to put on a training day this year on the topic), I think riding shotgun with someone up from the basecamp and assisting with the work would be a good place to start learning.

To what degree I (also at this point not  a member) understand the process, attending runs like this is part of the process of becoming a member.

Yes, this counts towards joining the club. You need to attend 2 meetings and 2 runs/events (combination of snow patrols, trail runs, maintenance runs, trail rides, toy run, apple hill visit); at that point you will be a Prospect. Then attend 1 additional meeting and 1 additional run/event, plus host a club bbq and pay your year dues to become full member. To continue your membership the following year, pay your fee and attend at least 1 maintenance run.

Good question, has anyone been up there to see if a snow run will live up to the name?

I saw some of the Hi-Landers 4wd club pictures from their snow patrol on MET this past weekend with no snow... if I interneted/Facebooked better I would attach a couple of pictures from them.

Rain is predicted on Saturday, 3/4 inch inch Placerville.....don't know what the snow level will be but would expect snow at higher elevations....chance of rain on Friday also.

If we scrub the run, my wife will likely make me work on the "honey do" list. Here is hoping for snow.

The National Weather Service is predicting at Strawberry for rain/snow from this Thursday night through Tuesday morning; 90% for Friday & Saturday. So it will snow, but it's not known how much rain will mix in. If the temperature stays down enough, it may be worth driving up & seeing (?).

My initial reaction to seeing this post was to ask you to specify which Strawberry.  There are three different towns in California by that name.  I've been to two of them.

But really, it's pretty clear which Strawberry is close enough to Pollock Pines to be relevant, so I am assuming that you are referring to the one along the 50, and that you are clear that you are looking at weather forecasts for that Strawberry.  Seanette and I have passed through that Strawberry a few times, but she was not with me the one time I actually stopped and checked out their general store.

The other Strawberry that Seanette and I have been to, thrice, now, is along the 108, toward the Sonora Pass.  The general store there has an owner that makes excellent fudge, which they sell at the store; available flavors being subject to his random whims.

The third Strawberry, to which we have never been, in in the Bay Area.

There is no need to specify which strawberry since our club’s trail is off of 42 mile at strawberry on hwy 50.  If you hear strawberry it is that strawberry.  Any other Strawberry, like the one off of hwy 4, should be specified.  So you are safe to assume our strawberry is the strawberry going forward.
