I do know the pads are worn differently. One side still has the nice tapered edge and the other is getting flat.

I used to wheel a lot. . .

Had to do that on the Rubicon the first year we all went. Sprayed 'em up real good and problem went right away. Sounded exactly like what you're describing too.

Don't spray the brake pads or the rotor surface. You don't want any oil of any kind on them.

Ya, I might take you up on that. I'll have to pick up some new pads first. Probably tomorrow. Thanks

I am home Sat. afternoon and Sunday if you want to do your arms and brakes. My Jeep will be in for the wheel base stretch all weekend, so I am open to work on yours.

I lightly sanded the caliper, then gave the rotors and pads a good coat of oil. We'll see how it works now.

Don't be so quick to judge. It'll take care of any brake related squeaking. 😀 😯

If you're serious about oiling the pads, don't even try to clean them. Just go get new ones.

They are Chevy 3/4 ton brakes

I'm going to put them back together tonight and see if the WD40 trick worked.

Question

How far inside the calipers should the piston be? How far should it stick out? They are sticking out about an inch and won't go in any further with channel-locks or c-clamp.

I used to wheel a lot. . .

On every brake caliper I've seen, the piston could be pushed all the way into the caliper.

Don't try to do it if you've got both calipers off though. If you push one all the way in it's likely to pop the other one out of the caliper entirely. Then you're in for a bit of trouble getting it back in, but most likely will have to get new calipers.

Rebuilt calipers are cheap from Reibies.
And, some pistons don't go all the way in, I have seen it vary on the same vehicle just depending on the manufacturer of the caliper. And...really John, if you want me to help, I will.
