After talking to some "experts" it seems I need to be using a better grease in my bearings. A high temp disc brake grease. Seems that I'm cooking the bearings and that's causing some play that breaks the nipple off of my spindle nuts. This is caused by a lot of use with bigger tires.

If you've cooked your bearings they've probably worn excessively. It would seem like a good time to replace them (and the races) too.

Just curious, who are the experts?

Also, are there some Ford spindle nuts comparable to the Stage 8 spindle nuts? I can't help thinking we talked about this before.

So, it's possible that my spindle nuts are still fine. It's probably just the play in the bearings.

I used to wheel a lot. . .

I suppose it's possible the main spindle nut is fine. But aren't the nipples on the locking nut sheared off or at least worn down? If they failed to hold once, I'm not sure I'd trust them if they're reused.

The spindle nuts were new when I put them in. I haven't looked at them and won't until Sunday. It's all speculation at this point. Right now I'm putting it all back together so I can drive it to Rob's house on Sunday to work on it.

My Stage 8 kits came in today. If you want John, we can put them on yours and you can order me a new set. They were not cheep though. They were $166 shipped to my door.

It's a safety thing. You don't want your front wheels falling off when you're flying down the highway and swerve to miss a bus full of nuns, all while your kids are in the back seat. 😈

I thought so. When I spun your rotor, it sounded bad.

The hubs are worse or just the bearing races? The races are pressed into the hubs and is what the bearings spin against.

No, the actual Warn hubs. I pulled the cover off of one side and all the guts fell out 😯

Rob and I changed Bearings, hubs, calipers, Stage 8 locking spindle nuts, resized the antirock links (hack saw), front control arm joints, wheel spacers and made a big mess in the garage 😀

Gotcha, I was thinking of the wrong part when I read "hubs".

Funny story...

We put the hub back in one side but couldn't get it to lock. It's the same hub we took out. But, it just wasn't working correctly. So, while Rob ran to Napa parts store, I tore the hub apart to see what was wrong with it. Turns out that it had a hub fuse in it that was turned upside down (I don't run fuses anymore). Thus it wouldn't engage. I've been running since Summer with 3 wheel drive. Who needs a front locker 🙄

The Stage 8 spindle kit was very nice. There is no way that it can back off now. Nice to know that it will stay in there under the correct preload now..Well worth the money if you actually wheel your Jeep.

Are you really looking for an Anti-Rock? I might be willing to sell mine. PM or email me if you're interested.
