When a timeline starts coming together for R&R, post it.

"lj4x4" wrote: I'm screwed! The motor needs a total rebuild. I drove the Jeep to Yuba City today for a class. As I arrived the check engine came on....again.... The code was cylinder six misfire 👿 . I have tried everything and the only thing left is a rebuild. Yes I could pull the piston drill hone the cylinder and put new rings on. This would only fix one cylinder and the rest of them are still beat to sh@#. It would be unethical and sleazy to knowingly sell a vehicle with a blown motor to anyone. So even though I can't afford it, I will be pulling the motor next week. I'm not sure how to get it to and from the machine shop, so I might ask for some assistance. Please excuse my rant but i'm not happy.

So sorry Bill. I realize money is tight but what about buying a complete motor for 800, swapping them, selling the jeep, doing a rebuild on the remaining motor and selling it for 800? I think Tom may be coming up on a new motor!

Those motors are cast iron and very heavy so be careful - ask for some help. I have done a 4.0 swap before (in an XJ). I can't believe the motor was bad at 75K miles. Did you compression tested the motor? What did the numbers come out at before and after the head rebuild? I fixed my missfire codes (cyl 2 and cyl 6 randomly) with a coilpack replacement.

Let me check compression first. That may get a lot of wheels turning. Got to smog check this weekend for registration.

Thanks for the imput everyone. I replaced most of the ignition system. I'm sure its a ring/ piston problem. The compression before was 80 and after the head work it was 60. I think after cleaning the piston I made it breathe better.

I will be pulling the motor on Saturday. Jeff is graciously letting me borrow his cherry picker and engine stand. I would love to have some help. As Brad had mentioned the motor is very heavy and I need the block in one piece. So if anyone has some time please stop by. Thanks all

The average rated life for the 4.0L motor is 225K! Any ideas what caused a failure so early in the motor's life? I know Rob was pretty good on maintenance. Maybe overheating?

It's hard to say for sure what happened if I were to guess I would say motor got hydrolocked by either water or oil. Or the motor was just push beyond its limit and couldn't handle the force is applied. I will find out next week if the problem is the piston or the Rings

I guess all I need to know now is life expectancy of the AW4. The Xfer case does need to be opened up so I can check it as well.

I'm curious about those stats too. 105k is nothing. I don't even think a Toyota is broken in at that point. mr-green

Tonight Carl came over and we tore into the jeep. We started at six thirty and worked till eleven. Joe sugested we remove the grill and radiator to have good clearance to remove the engine. So thats what we did. The front guard was a major pain. We had to cut off the bottom bumper tabs and use heat a chisle and a bfh to persuade it off. Next came the grill and radiator. We also pulled the drive shafts and the transfercase. A lot was acomplished, thanks to Carl. However there is still a lot more to go. We will resume tomorrow morning. If any one is board you are welcome to swing by.

Thanks Carl for all your help tonight, and thanks to anyone who comes tomorrow. This has become a huge ordeal, more than anyone could ever imagine! It certainly isn't what we "signed up for." Obviously, the true condition of the vehicle wasn't appropriately conveyed to us when we purchased it. It has consumed us, financially, emotionally, etc. But my hubby is a man of character and is doing this completely right for the seller. In the end, this will be an awesome rig, ready to go! Wish us luck! Time for a beer

Really Bill, I did not hide anything on that jeep. That Jeep passed smog at a certified station the day I sold it to you. You bought a used Jeep with 60K plus miles on that you knew had been wheeled hard. You even drove it to the Rubicon and wheeled it there. For you or your wife to insinuate I cheated you is complete bullsh#t. Attacking my character on here is a pathetic attempt at making yourself feel better.

Regardless of who is to blame for the situation. I have the responsibility to finish this jeep before it severely impacts my life. I have learned may lessons and want this project to be finished. I am half way through the engine rebuild and want to share the tech so that it might help someone in the future.

This morning Carl and Josh were here bright and early. We continued removing the intake and exhaust manifold, the ac compressor. In between eating doughnuts and drinking coffee we plug by plug and bolt by bolt removed all the connections. The big question was weather to remove the the engine with the tranny or not. We ended leaving it in. This worked good. Of cojrse I should have drained the tranny fluid first. But with the expertise of Josh and Carl we were able to manuver it out. We started at 7:30 this morning and had the motor on the stand at one and stripped down by three.

We found the culprit. It was indeed the coil pack. 😛

I meant that cylinder #6 took the brunt of a hydrolock experience(s). It was off roughly 0.02" give or take a couple thousandths. Cyl #1 was about .002" off.
