OfflineBear Valley Loop Trail (Sierra Trek pre-run) Saturday July 26th: This is a club run open to anybody with a stock, high clearance 4X4. This will be a pre-run for the Sierra Trek Outer Limits run that our club is leading two weeks later in August. The purpose of the run is to evaluate trail conditions and do planning and any necessary trail maintenance in preparation for the Outer Limits Run. Typically we have done some minor pruning and we mark the trail with flagging for the Outer Limits Run. Please bring the usual trail maintenance tools such as saws, lopper, shovels, etc. Trimming brush typically the main need.
The Bear Valley Loop Trail is rated as an easy trail. It is a combination of dirt roads, dirt trails and rock trails. All of the winch hills have easy bypasses for those who want to avoid the winch hills. The staging area for the trail is located about 20 minutes north of Truckee on Hwy 89. The trail tends to be dusty and does have some brushy areas that may need to be trimmed back. Mild cowboy pinstriping can occur.
Run details: Meet at the Truckee Shell gas station on Hwy 89, just south of I-80 (10278 CA-89, Truckee) at 8:30am on Saturday July 26th. Plan to depart at 9:00AM sharp or sooner if everyone is ready to go. Staging and drivers meeting will be on Cottonwood Road just east of Hwy 89 near Little Truckee Summit (note: there are vaulted toilets on the opposite side of Hwy 89 at the Little Truckee Summit OHV/Snowmobile staging area if in need). We will stop for lunch along the trail or ideally at the Bear Valley Campground which has vaulted toilets. We should be off the trail mid to late afternoon depending on how much maintenance is needed. Ideally there will be some time to play on the winch hills. This is an opportunity for anyone who needs to do their member BBQ in order to become a full member.

Thanks Jeff, I plan on going on this run but did notice that Signal Hill is also on the same day.
@Jeff R ... thoughts about coordinating this with the Signal Peak night run so participating in both are possible? Maybe start this one a touch later in the morning and plan a dinner at Smokey's BBQ in Truckee 🙂

It would nice to do both but that's a long dusty day in the saddle. Definitely Smokey's after the Bear Valley run.

OfflineWe can discuss changing the time to accommodate those that want to do the Signal Peak night run. We have always done the Bear Valley Loop trail run two weeks before Sierra Trek. It's ideal to do it two weeks before because we mark the trail with flagging and signs and we wouldn't want to do that any earlier. The following weekend is the weekend before Sierra Trek and several of us are planning to head up to Meadow Lake to camp the weekend before Sierra Trek, so that weekend wouldn't be good plus not everyone wants to run the trail two Saturdays in a row. Let's discuss the options here and at the next meeting.

@Jeff yeah I agree this is the right day to do Bear Valley run (I don’t want to change that)- just want to try to squeeze both this and signal peak run in 🙂

Since this is NOT OUR Adopt-A-Trail, are we allowed to use chain saws without a cert? I was in Mendocino National Forrest over Memorial Day weekend and had to drag 40-45 down trees off a trail in a single day and am thinking a saw would be good to have on Bear Valley Loop.
As far as I'm aware, you can use a chainsaw on the pre-run without being chainsaw certified. Just be sure that anyone who does is competent with a chainsaw because you don't want to have to drive out steering and shifting with only one hand.

OfflineIs there someone who can lead the Outer Limits pre-run in the event that I have to cancel? I know Brian can't make it but hopefully Kris or someone else who has participated in the Outer Limits pre-run and or the Outer Limits Run can take over if I can't make it. At this time my participation at Sierra Trek is also uncertain. My stepmother has been battling pancreatic cancer since October. Unfortunately chemotherapy proven unsuccessful and she is in a very rapid state of decline. Today we are discussing the possibility having her transition into hospice care. Obviously the road ahead for her is very unpredictable and I am unsure if I will be able to attend these two events due to her needs and the potential that she may die at any time in the near future. At this stage, I can't see myself attending the Outer Limits pre-run given her current situation. Should she die before the pre-run or Sierra Trek, I will need to take care of her affairs. I will do my best to try to be there if the situation allows. However, if someone can be available to function in my place if needed, I would be very appreciative.
